You can't go wrong at Gerrish's. The lobster & bacon sandwich is to die for. The pizza's are delicious. The quality of the food is superb. Haven't had even a mediocre meal there yet. Pick from a unique array of sodas, not just the run-of -the-mill variety. Great deserts, ice cream, interesting variety of tea and coffee. You can sit inside, take out, or eat on the front porch. Just discovered them this year, and it's already a ritual for us to go there when we're at the coast.

Gerrish's Provisions 352 Main Street Winter Harbor, Maine

Winter Harbor really can be a food destination now, with several great eateries offering dishes, decor and prices for everyone. Gerrish's is part of the reason. We own a vacation rental in Winter Harbor and Gerrish's is one of the places that I enthuse about to our guests, and it's one of the places we return to often during our own stays in this gem of a seaside village.

Gerrish's was purchased last season by chefs Brian and Maria and we haven't tried anything on the menu that didn't impress us.

Don't be fooled by the fact that you order at the counter...in addition to their coffee bar, there are delicious and very reasonably priced deli sandwiches and salads, there are some very special hot entrees on the menu in this sparkling clean and appealingly informal deli cafe.

On some weekend days Brian serves up a prime rib dinner that will make you want to return! We shared the $26 all inclusive dinner, which included a cup of clam chowder (delicious, creamy, thick); prime rib so infused with flavor and a wonderful wine sauce; oven roasted potatoes also so tasty that we never picked up a salt or pepper shaker; creamed spinach, and our choice of a dessert from the array of chef created treats (we selected a small berry pie to take home for later and it was superb!).

If you're not there on a day when prime rib is on the menu, don't despair because the other dishes and the sandwiches will make you happy you stopped by.

Always on the menu is a delicious, creamy pasta bowl with chicken, and a fried clam roll that will make you compare all future clam rolls to the one at Gerrish's: lightly coated fried clams topped with a bit of cole slaw, heaped on a soft ciabatta roll, .

We hope Brian brings back the calamari special because it was the most tender calamari with the lightest coating we've ever enjoyed.

Each time we've visited there has been a selection of two nice soups.

Lobster roll: only $9.95 all the times we've been there, but there are so many sandwiches and other things to try, we haven't gotten to the lobster roll yet.

Gerrish's is waiting for a wine and beer license, so we enjoy instead one of the funky Maine sodas from the cooler (blueberry is our favorite). They have a small but very interesting selection of gourmet cooking oils, vinegars, Maine-made mustards, wines to take home, pastas, etc.

You can eat inside in the black and white tiled deli atmosphere, or on the porch where you can end your meal with an ice cream cone while you watch Winter Harbor go by, and the people coming and going to the the Winter Harbor 5 & 10 (general store) across the road. On the walls are paintings by Wendilee Heath of Who Paints gallery almost next door, and many of them are available at a surprisingly low cost.

They have wonderful breakfast, too! And their own fresh baked breads.

This is a great place to pick up sandwiches, drinks and desserts for a picnic at oceanside Frazer Point picnic area (2 miles, inside the Schoodic Point section of Acadia National Park), or to enjoy - accompanied by the sight and sound of crashing surf) on the expansive granite expanse at Schoodic Point.

Come to Winter Harbor for the breathtaking scenery, but be sure to stop to enjoy a great meal.
