its a little distance from Bar Harbor but if you have the time it is exceptional!! Easy to stop and sit out on the rocks, looking across Frenchman's Bay towards Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mtn. And we stopped at a little hot dog stand in the center of Winter Harbor and highly recommend Bob, Matt and Nui's food and story.

We went on a Sunday evening and there were only two other cars in the parking lot. We got out and climbed the rocks to what a glorious sunset. The breakers against the cliffs are breathtaking. The cool ocean breeze is refreshing. Wear bug spray, sneakers and bring a jacket. We went in July and it was 60. I think it is worth the drive. If you go the entire peninsula you will see two lighthouses. Go at high tide for more dramatic sprays of water.

All of Acadia National Park is great. However, Schoodic ia not nearly as crowded as Mt Desert Island. The "MUST SEE" in the park is Scoodic Point at high tide. You need to arrive about an hour before high tide and stay for about 45 minutes after. It is a scene you will never forget. It is worth a trip to Maine just to experienced this. We visited in July 2013.

OK, Acadia proper IS awesome, but don't you want to get down the rocky oceanside and ditch the crowds? Blow out of Bar Harbor and stay in Winter Harbor. Catch a sunrise on the one-way loop road. If it's stormy watch the waves crash. At low tide slip and slide over to Little Moose Island. Check out the re-purposed Rockefeller Mansion-- great nature-centered displays the kids will like. Bring lunch unless you don't mind the 12 mile-loop to civilization and back (and boy, is it worthwhile to leave it behind!) Hike up Blueberry hill or just sit on the rocks and ponder your place in the Universe as the Bald Eagle family flies past. Watch the sun set over Mt. Cadillac from Schoodic Point and wait for the stars to come out. If there's no moon, you'll likely see the Milky Way like rarely before. If it's calm, see if you can catch reflected starlight in the sea. Moonrise ought to be a treat on the rocks everyone should experience. Schoodic Point is the REAL Maine!
