We were visiting Wells for a few nights on our way home from Acadia and when asked, Craig at The Beach Inn (a wonderful B&B in Wells) suggested we get our lobsters from here. Being really picky.....ok, I'll be honest....I'm a bit of a food snob, we stopped by to check the place out. The owner couldn't have been nicer, or the place cleaner (no seafood odor here) and just a great place. He ordered crabmeat for us so he'd have it when we came by on Sunday morning. When we got there on Sunday he greeted us, again, as friendly as ever. He cooked up 10 fabulous lobsters for us to take home, and happily packed our cooler with the crab, lobsters and some steamers (I couldn't resist). Then he, without being asked, added more ice to our other cooler with our drinks, etc. What a nice guy! If I'm ever back in the area you can bet I'll be at the Wells Lobster Pound again!

What's not to like? They hook you up with steamers by the pound, lobsters in all sizes. Butters, clam juice. You can also dine in. Steamers were tender and not gritty.
If they supply bibs and napkins we missed them.

The Wells Beach Lobster Pound has been my family's go-to destination for many decades for their cooked and cracked lobsters and steamers. We bring them back to the beach house for dinner, or sometimes sit at one of the small tables after a day trip to the beach. Their lobsters are boiled in salt water, yielding excellent flavor that I've never had anyplace else. Over the last few years they have added lobster rolls, chowder and lobster bisque - all excellent. This year they've added fried seafood - and I am in heaven!

My husband and I had fried clams (with bellies), fried scallops, french fries and cole slaw. Perfect amount of batter, beautiful golden brown color, not greasy, each piece looked beautiful - the seafood was delicious! The french fries have a little bit of coating to them and are thicker (but not too thick), perfectly retaining their heat from the fryer. The cole slaw had the right amount of sweet tang and crunch. They were out of the home made / hand made onion rings after their July 4th rush. I can't wait to try them.

The Pound is not a fancy restaurant. It is primarily a working lobster pound with about 8 tables where you can watch the water (across the street) or watch the activity as people come in to place their orders and pick up their food. If you are sitting to eat you can get beer or wine. Non-alchoholic drinks are also available for purchase (no restrictions). The fried seafood prices are in line with other establishments.

This is a family-run establishment, and has been in the same family since it's founding. Most people who walk through the door are greeted with a big 'hello' since there are a lot of regulars. I almost hesitate to let this little gem out of the bag for fear of too much success! But the addition of the fried seafood is so wonderful I want to share it and make sure they are successful with this new venture.
