I found a great nature trail in Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells. There were great views of a variety of habitats. It's a fairly flat 1 mile trail with 11 observation decks and strategically placed benches along the way. I walked it mid-day so the lighting was terrible for photography, then I went back around 5 pm when the lighting was more fun. I would love to photograph this refuge through the seasons. The refuge was so serene, if I lived in the area I would be a regular visitor. Plus it's free!

Having visited the Laudholm Farm in Wells, ME we almost passed up this refuge. Wow are we glad we did not miss this gem! While Laudholm Farm (just down the road) has 7 miles of paths and is historic, the marsh is thick and the views limited. Rachael Carson landscape is open, giving magnificent views of streams and the various ecological niches on the Maine coast.

There are about 10 lookout points with wonderful views. Informative signs explain the complexity of the environment you are seeing. We went in late September and the colors of the tree leaves made the sights even grander.

Entrance and parking are free and there is a guide. The path is almost level and well maintained (packed gravel or boardwalk). We saw a snake sunning itself on a rock, egrets, and grew to understand how the marsh works and is important to us.

I highly recommend visiting both Rachael Carson and Laudholm House. Totally different sights and points of view.

We were staying at The Tallwood Motel and the owners told us to come here. We walked here since we were so close. Wonderful trails!

Short walk through the woods, with stopping points for the self-guided tour. Trail was well maintained and easy to walk. Restrooms were not clean, but kind of what you would expect for a small outdoor area. We enjoyed the break form all the crowds so this is a welcomed spot on a vacation to Maine.

With ample parking and rest rooms this is a nice walking trail (about a mile) through the marshland along the Maine coast. Scenic vista resting points along the well-maintained trail. It is also dog friendly. Very enjoyable.
