The Tidewater Motel is probably the quirkiest, most interesting place we've ever stayed in. The motel, built on stiits of some sort, is not located next to the quiet harbor, but IN it. Several times a day, the tide flows from a tidal pond across the street, goes UNDER the balconies overlooking the sea, and then practically gallops into the ocean, making a wonderful roaring sound. Water flows the other direction several hours later. Most amazing water view I've ever seen; all that's missing are mountains! The owner, Phil Crossman, wrote an absolutely hilarious book about Island life called "Away Happens," which I've just sent to my daughter's new in-laws. The motel isn't fancy, but who cares? You take your continental breakfast back to your room, if you choose, and eat it on the little balconies, facing a watery heaven. The TIdewater fits in beautifully with this lovely, understated funky island.

Room Tip: All overlook the sea.

spent a night to celebrate our anniversary. great location; friendly people, good food. they have bikes to use that are great to explore the island. Don,t miss eating at the haven and swimming at the quarry.

Room Tip: great water views from most rooms: we called fairly late to book a room but still had a lovely, cozy room wher we heard the tide waters. No acbut not a problem

Needing to have just a one night stay at a motel on Vinalhaven, the only choice was the Tidewater. Very helpful owners but the condition of the room just didn't measure up. Everything was old and rather worn - not a big deal but the room just wasn't clean. The blankets were very worn and didn't look or smell clean. The floors didn't look clean either. The bathroom was in acceptable shape. I would stay there again if it was necessary but wouldn't look forward to it. This is in real contrast to the rest of Vinalhaven, which is just wonderful.

The Tidewater Motel is over the culvert that allows the tide to flow into a bay and then flow out. Therefore, the tides are coming in under your balcony or returning out to sea. When the tides are coming in, the sound is beautiful - very similar to a waterfall but more intense. The motel is vintage and the rooms are not updated, but they are clean, and the view is breathtaking. They serve a contrinental breakfast and the inn is in the heart of the town. The rooms do not have AC but only warm for a few minutes a day even in July because you are over the water and the island is 10 miles out to sea. This is our 3rd stay at the Inn and we are very pleased every time we stay. Vinalhaven is a true fishing island so there is not a lot of activities but it is such a peaceful place to drive around and the balcony is a wonderful place to read a book. We will be back.

You need to make ferry reservations to go to Vinalhaven by car 30 days prior to your planned stay, but if you have problems, the owner of the inn can arrange the necessary ferry ride for a fee.

Well, the Tidewater is an institution of Vinalhaven. It sort of reflects the essence of the island - unassuming, sturdy, clean and just want you want. The loudest thing is the sound of the tide going and coming that flows under the bridge. You will just love this little place. It is run in a laid back way - don't be surprised if your key is left with a note on the counter in the office when you arrive. They have bikes to rent and lots of wonderful stories. And make sure you check out the museum at the historical society - it is wonderful.

Room Tip: Tell them your needs. If you are staying for a while, get one of the rooms that has one of the little kitchenettes.
