Stonington is a great place to kick back and relax, an this inn is the best place for that in Stonington. The rooms overlook the harbor and you can spend hours just watching the lobstermen and the loons.

We have stayed at the Inn three times: summer, fall and winter. It is a favorite for us. The rooms are perfect, just like the view. The breakfast is delicious and convenient especially when the weather allows dining on the deck. The staff is friendly, polite, and helpful. Check-in and check-out are easy.

We have stayed at The Inn on The Harbor in Stonington off and on for many years. The location, with the deck overlooking the harbor, is perfect if you enjoy watching the lobster boats go out,the tides change, the pine covered islands appear in the mists, and the light change on the water and in the sky. The rooms are very comfortable, well appointed, and most have harbor views. One may enjoy breakfast of home made granola and muffins, yhogurt, fruit, and excellent coffee in the delightful lobby/breakfast area, take a tray to one`s room, or eat on the deck. There is a book with much useful information about hiking trails, boat trips, and places to eat in each room. This is a very special place.

We stayed at the Inn two nights. The decor is not fancy. It is "rustic Maine". If you're looking for fancy with room service, this isn't it. Everything else, however, is first rate. The rooms have all the necessary amenities and then some, and the staff is just plain fun to be around. Christina, the owner, is a hoot with a great background and fun to talk to. The staff will do whatever it takes to make your visit a happy one. The harbor-side rooms have a magnificent view of the harbor, and the street-side rooms can use the harbor-view deck. A simple but adequate breakfast is included in the room rate, and you can have it in the dining are, the deck, or your room. We'll definitely go back. Ask for the Heritage Room - the view is wonderful.

I debated whether or not to review this inn, as I'm inclined to want to keep it my little secret. This place was heaven. After visiting all of the tourist towns along Maine's coast (Bar Harbor, etc.) we were so relieved to find a place as peaceful and perfect as Stonington and Inn on the Harbor! The rooms are nothing fancy, though nicely maintained. The real draw is the location... you are literally ON the harbor, with the decks outside each room jutting out over the ocean. The other guests seemed to enjoy the tranquility as well, and everyone could generally be found relaxing outside. The continental breakfast was great, and the staff was wonderful (especially Kate... so friendly!) A really wonderful experience!

The view from our room out over the harbor was fabulous and the notebook in each room with information about the area was very helpful.
It was a clean room and they have wi-fi available in the rooms which was nice in helping us plan the rest of our trip.
I am stumped by the no shampoo thing though. It's a small issue, but the other 4 inns we stayed at during this Maine trip all provided it so I don't know why this inn resists providing this amenity.
Just two changes and I would have given the Inn on the Harbor an excellent rating: one, the mattress and pillows were awful. For the price paid per night you expect something more than a very thin pillow and a mattress that I'm pretty sure I slept on back in my summer camp days.
And two, the walls are paper thin so be forewarned. We got to listen to the baseball game next door on our first night and the guests in the room were loud talkers so it was like having them with us in our room.

When we arrived in Stonington, my husband parked his Z3 next to a duct-taped pickup. Longtime residents of coastal Maine, we were celebrating our anniversary with a relaxing trip down the beautiful Blue Hill peninsula to Stonington. At Inn on the Harbor, we settled in by our picture window and were entertained by the 24 hour cycle of activity in the working harbor that purportedly brings in 1/3 of Maine's lobster catch.

After entertaining out-of-state guests all summer at our home, as we do here in Maine, it was fun to BE the guest. Lots of information about the area was available in rooms, and there were repeated invitations to ask for any amenities we found lacking. Decor was traditional and understated, but there were some very nice touches, including a warm and lovely Persian rug on the bathroom floor. So those who complained about a lack of comfort here, just chose not to ask for what they wanted. On an island one should expect careful use of resources.

Staff and residents alike were welcoming. At the Fisherman's Friend, a three-minute walk from the Inn, we had a wonderful stew made with the freshest of Stonington's crabmeat, and a raspberry/blueberry crisp that could have fed another couple as well. Then we took on an evening walk along the harbor, and were surprised to have a brief chat with a gentlemen who had worked at a local quarry; it turned out he had helped cut the granite used at the Kennedy memorial in Arlington. We had been photographing the harbor, and he gently approached to make sure we didn't miss the quarry in the distance.

Eventually we strolled back to our very comfortable room and watched a full moon rise over the water. Next morning we enjoyed some delicious coffee on the deck, along with a choice of fresh baked goods and even more healthy fare. We found some unexpected treasures, books and an antique bag perfect for my niece's upcoming wedding, at -- where else --Unexpected Treasures.

We will return to Stonington, and to Inn on the Harbor, an unexpected treasure to be sure.
