Owner description: We welcome you to visit one of the most extraordinary places on the coast of Maine. The Deer Isle-Stonington archipelago in Penobscot Bay is a unique and breathtaking area, home to the largest concentration of bald eagles in the lower 48 States, and over 60 uninhabited islands. It is well known to be the destination of choice for kayakers, sailors, campers, and any nature enthusiast. People from all over the world come to this place because of the quiet, un-spoiled and awe-inspiring environment. They come to Old Quarry because we provide the perfect access to this magical body of water, where seals and porpoises thrive and sea birds are abundant, where historic windjammers sail, and lighthouses stand stalwartly on rocky cliffs as sentinels of the night.

I was in the area with lots of relatives including two teens and two toddlers. Old Quarry arranged an evening harbor tour for the whole group, 19 in all, along with lobsters, corn, slaw on an island in the harbor. We brought our own drinks and steamers, which they gladly cooked. A great extended family outing for a fair price.

Great tour, the captain and engineer paid particular attention to our 7 and 3 year old ensuring a very memorable experience for all of us.

I made reservations for 2 outings with Old Quarry well in advance and everything went just as planned. We went on a 2 night kayak trip with a professional experienced guide and then went for 3 nights out to the cabin on Lazy Gut Island. The equipment we rented was excellent and the cabin is fabulous.Captain Bill has quite an operation going in Stonington and works hard to keep his customer service top notch.

On the spur of the moment we took the "Afternoon Sight-seeing and Natural History Eco-Cruise" scheduled for later that day. As advertised, we stopped at a freshwater quarry site which was beautiful (others on our trip went swimming, but we were unprepared). Then we stopped at Isle au Haut and picked up two bikers followed by a slow cruise past the lovely lighthouse. Captain Ted was accommodating of our cameras and had good suggestions for dinner.

This is the second time we've come up to Stonington to camp at Old Quarry. Last time, we came for five nights with a 1 and 3 year old, this time they are 3 and 5. It's a wonderful spot for camping and especially with kids - tons to do in the area. we rented canoes on both trips and paddled out to the surrounding islands both times. THe hike up to the actual old quarry is beautiful. Check out Shell Beach and Barred Island, Nervous Nellies Jams and Jellies and definitely get the lobster dinner one night at your campsite. Not all the sites are great - we stayed in the Deep and Middle Woods sites - sites 10 and 11 (or 11 and 12 - Middle Woods is definitely 11). They are gorgeous sites and you will feel like you are in a fairy land of ferns and moss! Captain Bill is personable and full of information and guidance. This place is a hidden gem!!!
