“Great campground - going back soon”
Reviewed June 25, 2009

I cannot believe the negative review I just read. I stayed here in 2007 with my wife and friends and had an amazing time. We stayed in the premium tent sites along the field. The sites were very prviate. You get what you pay for however. If you opt for their cheapest site you have a little less privacy. Our site was on the side of the field which was huge and had a great nights view for stargazing. We have camped at many campgrounds and were bothered for having fires to late and talking (TALKING not screaming or playing music and being rude). They let you camp here and do not act like parents or police. You are there to have fun right? The trading post is great and I had bout 2 jumbo lobsters, they even let us borrow pots to cook them in. !!!!!!!!!! How many campgrounds can say they have lobster. The campground is only about 15 min from bar harbor and is in the national park. The clost attraction we enjoyed was echo lake. This is a crystal clear lake (kinda small for a lake) with a huge cliff on one side. You can climb to the top for an awesome view. I though the staff was very nice and accomodating. I have found many campground hosts to be old bitter people however this was not the case here. The cost of the campground is also comparable to many other camprgrounds in the area. They also have a pool and basket ball court and horseshoe pit. They also let you borrow equipment. Again we stayed here in the summer of 2007 for 4 nights and we are going back very soon. Our reservations have been made for some time now and I cannot wait to get back and camp.

We picked Smuggler's Den based on their website. It showed hiking tails from the campground, nice wooded sites, etc. We were disappointed. We booked the site several months in advanced and requested from the hosts "a nice secluded, quiet site". We were in a loop with a site that looks at the back of some cabins. No sooner had we set up and sat down to eat, when they put another camper in the site right next to us, even though there were at least 7 other sites open on the loop !!! The next RV to pull in was given the spot right next to the one next to us. The sites were so close that the next sites picnic table was about 3 feet from my car and when the neighbors sat around the campfire, they were pretty much against my sewer hose. Quiet hours are not enforced, except for 1 of 8 nights there was plenty of noise after midnight {quiet hours start at 10}. The owner started mowing the grass at 8 in the morning and mowed our site while we were trying to sleep in.
It is located in the heart of Acadia, but is 20 minutes or so from the Park Loop Road and the sites there. If you are looking for a place to pull in and spend little time at camp and party by the fire all night with little thought to the other campers, this is the place for you. We were disappointed.

We have camped here 5 times in the past and plan to do so again Sept. 2009.The hiking and biking trails are just down the road. There is a market 1/4 mile from campground and a nice little resturant almost right across from the camp ground The owners and campground hosts are friendly and helpful. It's nice and quiet at night. The pool and play areas are nice.Sports equiptment can be borrowed from the office. We tent camped the first couple of times and the best sites are located around the edge of the large field. The last 2 years we have rented a cabin ,another nice experience. There does need to more showers though.

This is a small, quiet, and clean campground. The pool is heated and there is a very little playground. No camp activities but the kids can borrow sport items from the office(basketball, softball, frisbee, horseshoes, etc). The island explorer bus stops here. We had a premium site(150) which was great because there was less traffic and the kids could play in the open field. Also we had privacy on one side. The only complaint I have is the bathrooms. Even though it is small there is only 3 showers for the whole campsite. The pressure sometimes was not great and you have to be careful with the temperture of the water. It could be warm then it turns scorching. We went the second to last week in August and at night it was down to 50's. But no mosquitios
