“A Great Getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2007

This was my second trip to the Seawall Motel and it was better than I remembered it. Dave and Vicky are great and make every effort to make your stay enjoyable. You can walk out of your room to look across at incredible views or take a walk down the Seawall. It is a great place to escape from it all as it is very secluded and there is not a lot of traffic in that area.

Whatever your interest is whether it is hiking, biking or kayaking they can point you in the right direction based on first hand knowledge. They know the island well and can tell you exactly where to go. Dave sent me on a nice bike ride one morning and even told me where the nice views would be along the way. We also asked them about hiking trails and they even told us which way we should go up (and they were right),

Breakfast is also great and it is a good time to sit around and talk with Dave and Vicky or the other guests. You are pretty isolated so you don't get the best cell phone reception but there is wireless internet.

We have been vacationing in Maine for over 20 years and have stayed all along the coast from Wells to Machais and have found no nicer place to stay than the Seawall Motel.

The owners Dave and Vickie are without a doubt the kindest people that make you feel like you are really on vacation. The quiet laid back atmosphere of the continental breakfasts and the attentiveness to every guests needs is superb.

Quiet morning and evening walks along the Seawall bring me back to less complicated younger days. Acadia park surrounds the motel, wildlife abound and the sound of the evening surf is like music.

I would highly recommend the Seawall Motel for anyone that needs a respite from a busy hectic life, you’ll return back home feeling younger.

There are many things to like about Seawall Motel, but I had a fairly bad experience and I wasn't sure what rating to give it here.

The owners of the hotel are VERY nice and hands-on in all aspects of the operation of the hotel. They have definitely done a good job taking an older generic motel and turning it into a pleasant place.

The motel has 2 levels with entrances to each room directly from the parking-lot. There was a glimpse of a view across the street to the ocean. It is relatively close to Southwest Harbor (a short drive), so is actually on a very nice side of the island away from the chaos of Bar Harbor.

The room was clean and simply appointed. It was pretty large, and had a window in the back as well as the one in the front so you could actually get a breeze through the room. No real complaints with the room. Lots and lots of tv channels which are important if you can't sleep (see below).

The bad part of the hotel stay for me had to do with my neighbors. The walls are VERY VERY thin, so I could hear absolutely everything going on in the next room. For the first 2 nights, I was next to a very loud snorer (and he was generally loud at other things too) and hardly slept. The hotel was full, so I didn't see any point in asking for a change of rooms. I have no doubt that the hosts would have accommodated such a request if it were possible. The other problems with the rooms/ neighbors is that the hotel rooms are nonsmoking, but the balcony is not. So, there were neighbors that would sit/ stand on the balcony directly outside my room's window and smoke. So forget any sea breezes, I had to shut the windows. One woman even brought the bedding from her room outside to wrap around herself as she smoked. I'm not sure what the owers could have done to improve my experience (althouggh banning smoking on the balcony in an otherwise smoke-free motel would have helped). I don't imagine they could easily improve soundproofing.

We either woke up too late or woke up and left too early to try the continental breakfast (served between 7-9 AM), so I can't comment on that.

Price was a pretty good deal for the island at $110/ night.

I am sitting in room 19 as I type this review...The rooms are very clean, comfortable and have a great view of the Atlantic Ocean. We are here with three of our children for a week and are having a great time. The owners Dave and Vickie are great people and treat everyone like family. We will be back!

Prior to our trip we spent months trying to figure out where to stay in Maine. Two weeks before our vacation a friend told us about Seawall Motel and that she was out there last year and knew we would like it. A nice clean place, away from the crowds. Not fancy and high priced. The owners were very nice and knowledgable about the area. If they recommended a restaurant, we knew it would be good food. We followed their advice about fishing, biking, etc. and were never disappointed.

  • Liked — Beautiful quiet area near the ocean.
  • Disliked — Not near the carriage trails for biking.

We planned to stay two nights at the Seawall Motel, but enjoyed it so much that we extended our visit. The motel sits right across the road from the ocean and there is a beaver pond on site. This is the "quiet side" of the island, but the restaurants and activities are only a short drive away. We prefered being close enough to nature that we could actually hear the waves, but not have to pay extra for the pleasure!

The large modern motel rooms are very clean with carpeting and bedding that looks brand new. There is also a convenient guest laundry. The owners, Dave and Vickie, are extremely friendly and very willing to share their extensive love and knowledge of the area. The expanded complimentary breakfast turned into a "family" sharing time of island history and guest's adventures.

The only thing missing that would have been helpful were hair dryers and irons, but I'm sure if we asked we would have been provided one!

Would we return? In a minute!!!

A short drive from these trails is the Bass Harbor Lighthouse that has been guiding mariners with its light since 1858. The dramatic setting, especially at sunset, is a photographer's dream. The Seawall Motel sits directly across from the famed seawall and close proximity to many activities of what the park has to offer. It is a two-story Motel with free Wi-Fi, in-room phones, cable TV and complimentary continental breakfast.
