“It's like going home to family you've never met!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

June 17 - 18, 2012 We were the guests of Susi and Dick Homer in their comfortable family home on the water in Southwest Harbor, Maine. We, two couples, arrived to be greeted warmly by Susi Homer, "Welcome to our home!" Our rooms were appointed with everything a guest could ask for and the views from our window to the Cranberry Isles were breathtaking. The morning breakfasts were delicious and Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor only a short distance away. So, if you want to "get away from it all" to relax, to enjoy the natural beauty of Maine and the company of a wonderful family, we know you'll love staying at The Birches!

Room Tip: The 3 guests rooms are large and comfortable. Ask the innkeepers about the room that will best fit...

This beautiful house with big rooms and views of the water was our home for 3 happy days. The breakfast of specially cooked menus varied each morning. The house is kept spotlessly clean, and the owners are friendly and responsive to requests. The king-size bed, wireless internet and flat screen TVs in each room are welcome modern touches in traditional bedrooms with private baths. Acadia National Park is right there with more trails and sights than you can see in one trip. We will be back next year.

The Birches is a beautiful old house. It's gracious and lived in and makes you feel right at home. The owners, the Homer family, have lived here for generations and they do everthing to make you feel welcome and comfortable. The view of the ocean from my room was breathtaking. And the room! The Turret overlooks the lawn and garden with the ocean beyond and it is large but cozy. Quiet, relaxing and makes you feel like you want to stay longer. Richard Homer, the patriarch, makes breakfast and does a spectacular job. He makes a mean rum drink too! Both Suzy and her father have traveled widely so there were great discussions of both theirs and my travels but if you want to know the best places on the island to eat, shop, hike, or amble they are the best. I loved being there and plan to get back whenever I can.

Room Tip: I like all of them but the "Garden" is my favorite

Run by the Homer family who welcomed us as part of their home immediately. Delicious hearty breakfasts, (try the home made apple syrup); Susi and Dick share expert travel advice- local and state wide. Rooms are spacious, very comfortable, lots of closets, and quiet. Living room has a lovely view down to the harbor. Great morning and evening discussions sharing adventurous travel and life experiences. A peaceful, sylvan location away from the crowded bustle of Bar Harbor, but within easy reach of everything Mt. Desert Island has to offer. View packed hiking trails just up the road. We were At Home while staying there. Perfect.

Room Tip: Any room is a great location. No road noise, period.

The Birches is a beautiful and intimate B&B overlooking Sommes Bay in the paradise that is Mount Desert Isle. Because the Homer Family (which counts a former president of MIT and a former president of Bethlehem Steel in its ranks) lives on site, it's like a visit with a family in a great old home. But that's part of the fun as Suzy is entertaining and an encyclopodedic source of knowledge about MDI and Maine in general. The free wi-fi works great and the breakfasts are tasty (if not fancy). The grounds are magical as well.

The view and property is stellar. A short walk to the entrance of Acadia National Park. Easy to find and a great location. THe owners were more the friendly, helpful and interested in our plans for a great time. They assisted in travel, directions and making reservations. The breakfasts were awesome too, as was the "happy hour" drink offered each night.

Other reviewers have characterized the location and the ambiance of the
Birches very well. I won't repeat that. I badly needed a break and wanted to return to
Acadia for a few days. I was fortunate to get a booking at the last minute at the Birches with no other requirement than a bed and a desire to be "left alone." What a pleasant and welcome surprise I had. You really feel like you're free to do whatever you want. You can join in breakfast in the dining room, or take a plate and sit at the long table in front of the window overlooking the harbor. You can wander into the kitchen to microwave your coffee. The Birches is the home of the owner and you fell like you're a part of a new family for a few days. It is neither pretentious nor fussy. It is Maine at its solid best. I delayed writing this so that i could get the room I wanted in September before others discover the Birches. This next time, I return for a week
