Red Sky is the perfect choice for a special occasion. The owners pay attention to every detail: cocktails are prepared to perfection, an amuse-bouche is a little bite of heaven, meals are made with the freshest local ingredients & imaginatively concocted, desserts are almost sinful. I had locally caught fresh cod, quite rare in New England these days, prepared simply but beautifully and it was a cloud of deliciousness that melted in my mouth! We ordered wines by the glass with 2 different courses taking the recommendations of the bartender (sommelier?) and were very impressed by the quality. Every employee was quiet, efficient and gracious. We really felt the entire staff takes pride in working at Red Sky and works well as a team. The warm ambience and entire dining experience was flawless. Considering we showed up without a reservation (each thought the other had made it) and the restaurant was fully booked -- the graciousness we were shown was remarkable. The outside storefront of Red Sky is quite inauspicious and its location on a side street on the " quiet side" of Mt. Desert Island might cause one to pass it by. Also, I'd heard it was fairly pricey so it took us a few years to get around to trying it since we were 'judging the book by its cover.' This is the best restaurant on Mt. Desert Island. It is expensive and its worth every penny! Memorable experience!

We liked Red Sky so much that we went twice, and I would have liked to have gone more. This place is as good as any comparable restaurant in a major metropolitan area, and is even better because of the laid back atmosphere and beautiful surroundings.

The folks at Red Sky really KNOW food and wine. Recommended specials are sure bets, as is just about anything on the menu. With two full meals, we had no misses. Justin at the bar deserves a special shout-out for his incredible knowledge of wine and ability to pair available selections to menu choices.

Don't fill up before dessert -- the selections here are out of this world.

A trip to Southwest Harbor is not complete without a trip to Red Sky. Reservations are suggested, but not required. Dinner at the bar with Justin is a real treat and available to walk-ins, should the dining room be full.

August 2009: We called the afternoon of our arrival for a reservation and since we were available right away, they were able to work us in. It's probably best to make advance reservations. Located in an unassuming building on a small side street in Southwest Harbor. We saw people dressed in anything from shorts and sandals to suit jackets and dresses so it seems everything is accepted though one may feel more comfortable when wearing something like informal business casual. We had an early reservation and were seated immediately. The restaurant is basically one large room with the entry on the corner and room is divided by support columns with a bench on one side and a bar on the right with some tables which you see first upon entering. We were seated in the dining room side where there is also a fireplace. I found the decor to be pleasing with warm colors and large impressionist style watercolors on the wall. We were given some roasted garbanzo beans to snack on after we ordered which was a nice surprise and were very good. We were interested in going to Red Sky because we read that they buy and use local, organic ingredients. We found out that they also bake their own bread every single day which is rare with restaurants today and the bread was absolutely delicious. One of us had the Mexican style seafood stew with lobster, scallops, and mussels and the other had sea scallops with roasted beet risotto and a Clementine sauce. While we felt we waited a little longer than usual for the main course to arrive, both dishes were beautifully presented and tasted very good. Our waiter did take some time with us to help us find a wine by the glass that we liked, even bringing a couple of tastes to the table. While our food was good, we agreed that it was slightly overpriced, though we did not find the restaurant over pretentious. Also, there was plenty of wait staff to fulfill various specific roles [taking orders, removing plates, setting new silverware, etc.] we found our waiter to be fairly unavailable during our stay, seemingly giving other tables more attention. However the support wait staff did a fine job. Overall we were pleased with our meal. We had a limited time in the area and wanted to try other restaurants but if we'd had more time, I'm sure we would have eaten here again. We will go back if we're in the area next year I'm sure.

Great local and fresh ingredients. Excellent food that was slightly overpriced. It was extremely busy but we had a party of six that was seated quickly. The drinks were slow but the food came hot and on time.
One of the best meals we had on Mt Desert Island.

We have eaten there twice in August 2009, at one of the supposedly best restaurants on the island. The menu was interesting enough, though not brilliant, but we'd have overlooked its ok-ness were it not that on the second visit, with 5 friends, we had to wait for our table (we had booked it for 8pm) for 50 minutes, and were told this by an admittedly harrassed waitress who nonetheless seemed supremely indifferent to the fact that we had to go out into the town to find a drink elsewhere in the town (and it was a cold night) in order to pass the time: the Red Sky's bar was mean and crowded. It might well have been the busiest night of their year, as the waitress said, but it didn't occur to her or the manageress to apologise that night, let alone to give us a complimentary bottle of wine or two or a free dessert when we were served at last. The manageress dismissed our repeated complaint next day with arrogant contempt. 'She'd had enough of this case,' she said to an island local when he spoke on our behalf, or something to that effect. To be fair, the owner or manager did phone next day to apologise when the story somehow got through to him (no compensation offered, however). All that apart, the restaurant is dully decorated and overcrowded and noisy and has no view. A deaf member of our party couldn't join in conversation for the duration of the meal. In every respect this dump, for all its pretensions, was knocked sideways by the more attentive service and pleasanter and spacier surroundings of Fiddlers Green restaurant in the same town. Fiddler's Green didn't have quite the same ambition in the menu, but the cooking was excellent nonetheless, and the whole experience much more enjoyable.
