Our family loves this place! We vacation on Mt Desert Island every summer, and we always go to The Top of the Hill several times during our stay. The food and the service is top-notch. Very family-friendly...great children's menu. We often have a large party of extended family with us, and they accommodate us perfectly in their back room.

Some of our favorite dishes: cioppino, halibut, fried clams, lobster, Caesar salad, great bread...there are always nice wine specials...and yummy desserts.

Thank you, DuMuros, for being there...so that I don't have to cook while on vacation!

Middle of the week, evening, not busy really. But we learned thru grapevine there was a large party, in the back I guess. [At Head of Harbor, the server told us she had a party of 14 but wanted to get our order in ahead of the large group! Sweet!] We chose the outdoor seating. Server seemed new at it. Menu was not clear: some entrees came with different sides, but they weren't sorted. Once the person chose an item, he was told "it doesn't come with anything." Search again. One of us ordered a martini which, once at the table, was not chilled and tasted watered down. A mild apology from the server; don't know if manager or bartender were informed. Meals: eh and we four all had different entrees. Salads, ok. Had to ask for more bread; baked potato was not warm; had to ask for butter for potato and bread; One entree stuck to the skillet it was in and the lemon to use on the fish was cooked to high heat and burned the fingers of the one who picked it up to squirt! It took forever for someone to come and roll down the plastic wall when it started raining. No view as it is right off the road. We were glad we didn't save this "top rated" place for our last dinner in Maine! they just didn't seem to care.

My wife had halibut, too much oil. did not have any flavor. flat. needed seasoning.
I had a chicken dish, a mess of ingredients. pasta side was TERRIBLE. canned tomato sauce. it had been put together, not made. dessert was overpriced. key lime pice was TINY.

So sorry you didn't enjoy your experience with us, but, just to clarify; we don't serve halibut, so we're not sure what you ate. We do have a haddock dish that is cooked only in butter, for those ingredient sensitive guests, and it is meant to be eaten by those who have simpler tastes, or as I stated, sensitivities.
As for the sauce, or "gravy" as my Grandmother used to call it (her recipe), from a can-NEVER!
Lastly, first itme I've ever had a complaint about my Key Lime Pie since we put it on the menu 12 years ago, but, as they say-you can't please everyone-thankfully, we manage to please most.

Our evening at the Top of the Hill was an unexpected delight! The friendly, courteous waitstaff and the manager took extra effort to help us find a wine we enjoyed. The cioppino was the outstanding favorite. Lucky us to have found this diamond in the rough!!

I along, with 9 colleagues, recently had a 'company' dinner function at De Muros Top of the Hill Restaurant in Southwest Harbor ME. The experience generally was delightful. Food quality, service and staff interaction were outstanding. One of our party accidentally spilled a good quantity of water all over the table. Staff and owner Debby immediately responded and came to our rescue and made us all feel as if the incident was inconsequential and had us back on track in no time at all. We jointly agreed that Top of the Hill was a first class choice and excellent choice for our get together and will all plan to return.
