“An awful place to be avoided at all costs.”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

Be sure to avoid this place at all costs; you will leave hungry and angry, with a feeling of having been seriously ripped off.

My husband and I very unfortunately chanced upon it during a summer visit from Europe. After waiting a good 45 minutes for what was meant to be a quick outdoor lunch (we repeatedly asked if there were problems, but were given absolutely no feedback), we were finally given a miniscule portion of tepid deep-fried shrimp (tiny industrial frozen ones), another miniscule portion of fried clams (also truly tiny, and there were 5-6 of them at most), two sodas and two miniscule cups of coleslaw. The food was cold and tasteless when it got to us (still with no apologies for the ridiculous delay, especially given the fact that there were hardly any other customers when we arrived), yet they'd made sure to have us pay beforehand - $37! - so we couldn't do anything but wait and be cheated.

Another couple from Italy with a disabled child waited unhappily for 45 minutes as well, only to be finally served 1 small container of clearly industrial, lukewarm "lobster bisque", half a lobster roll and a tiny cup of coleslaw for which they too were charged an exorbitant amount.

Finally, in order to draw customers the owners of this fake cutesy "down-home" place had tightly tethered a poor calf outside in the blazing sun, forcing it to wear a sort of hat with felt antlers upon its poor overheated head. A horrible experience all around, something one does not expect in beautiful Maine. To be avoided at all costs!

“Old school music, great food”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

We've already made two trips here for the reasonably priced fresh whole lobster, onion rings to die for and the old tunes playing while you wait to dine on your cooked to order food. The gourmet ice cream is also a real treat and best price we've encountered on lobster.

With hours from 8:30 to 8:30, you can avoid peak hour crowds.

The picnic tables and covered outdoor setting make for a fun, outdoor dining experience in the cool fall weather.

At night there's a fire and lanterns which make it cozy and romantic.

“The best lobster pound around, but so much more.”
Reviewed October 6, 2013 via mobile

First off, the owner is dating a lobsterman, so she gets the very best lobsters, which are then prepared perfectly. But that's just the start. It is like stepping back in time to 1952 with sock hop and doo-wop music playing and a diner look and feel. While you wait for your food to be prepared, kick back in front of a fire and soak in the beautiful view out back. If that weren't enough, the owner is the freshest breath of air I've had in a long time. A+++

“Serendipity”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

Just by chance we drove by this unassuming but freshly painted drive-in with picnic table seating outside that was casual and spotless. The lobsters were fresh as in "live in a bucket". Charlotte, the owner/chief cook and bottle washer was friendly and quick. We ordered the foot long lobster roll which came PACKED with succulent chunks on a real butter roll--not a hotdog bun. This was 10 times better than what we'd paid half again as much for in downtown Bar Harbor. They also serve homemade organic ice cream made with just 4 ingredients. The peach flavor was scrumptious.

“Great lobster and a very fair price.”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

Over a 6 day stay on MDI, my husband and I happened upon Sawyer's Lobster Pound. We had eaten at many of the local pounds, but found Sawyer's to be our quick favorite! Great lobster served by very friendly owners, at a reasonable price! The atmosphere was fun: picnic tables, fire pit, music. We ordered two 2lb lobsters that were so good we went back for a third! The family next to us were thoroughly enjoying their "make it yourself" lobster rolls. This should be on your list of go-to's if you are looking for a great Maine lobster shack. A lot of the locals did not seem to know/recommend Sawyer's since it has changed owners and is now only in its second season, so don't let them steer you away! By the way... it's BYOB!
