“Great hike, complete with old fire tower”
Review of Beech Cliff Loop

Beech Cliff Loop
Reviewed September 4, 2013

This was a great hike with spectacular views. The old fire tower made it that much more interesting. When you get to that point, you must stop and climb those rocks and the first floor of the tower. (You can't see much from the trail itself) Once you hoist yourself over the boulders, be prepared to gasp. On a clear day, the view is insane!

Semi steep inclines at some points but take your time- It's so worth it.

Beech Cliff Trail and loop has the most spectacular view in the Park for the least amount of walking; the walking is steep but level ground for those like me that can't physically walk far. It has cliffs overlooking SW harbor, Greening Island, Echo Beach, and Norwood Cove. Its a great place for sitting on the rocks and reading a book, so long as you don't encounter a bunch of noisy, inconsiderate people with kids running around on the rocks which happens from time to time. The actual cliff area isn't large like some trails, but it is beautiful.

Our whole family from 76 to 12 years old completed this trail. A few incline in some places but a great trail with some beautiful ocean views.

My wife and I are in our 50s, and this is our favorite 1/2 day hike in Acadia. Only 2.5 miles or so, yet some sections offer a good moderate climb. Start from the parking lot - if you begin the trail on the right side, you'll have a pretty steep climb up. My suggestion is to start along the long, flat trail that begins at the far left end of the trail. You'll hike a ways on this trail before seeing your first sign up to Beech.

A delightful way to start a day!

The Firetower on top offers spectacular views of the forests, lakes, and harbors, although the top-most section is only open on Sundays from 10AM-noon. From the tower, continue on a bit along the South cliff trail for spectacular lake views.

Bring your camera and binoculars. Don't be in a hurry. Take your time and enjoy the beautiful views. Pull over to let traffic pass you.
