Friendship sloop. Google it . An indigenous Maine workboat design. Originally designed for lobstering in these waters under sail. Old school. Wood. Gaff rigged. Can sail itself. Made for these waters.

And Karl knows his boat and these waters.

This is not some prissy cruise ship, and this was not a cocktail cruise. This was Maine sailing. Blustery, gusty late afternoon in late September. Gray, leaden sky. Winds picked up as we close hauled back, probably 20 gusting to 25. Heeled over. Getting a little spray.

This is what we call sailing in Maine. You like real sailing , on a real boat, with a real seaman; sail with Sail Acadia. You want a flat sail, with a nice dry white and a buffet; don't bother.

A great three hours on the water. One of the best sails I have ever been on.

Friendship sloop, sailing in it's native waters. Dream sail.

On a recent visit to Southwest Harbor, our three generations of family chartered the Alice E for a sunset sail. We all agreed it was by far the best thing we did while visiting MDI. Captain Karl was fantastic, sharing lots of great information about the area and the wildlife. He spotted multiple porpoises and harbor seals, as well as an osprey flying overhead. We watched an incredible sunset with a bottle of wine. Captain Karl also brought along delicious fresh-backed bread, apples and cheese, an unexpected surprise. If you are visiting MDI, this is a must do!

A perfect sail on a hot but windy day brought our group of 6 onto the Alice E. This historic Friendship Sloop built in 1899 is like taking a scenic sailing time travel vessel around the scenic waters around MDI. Owner and Captain Karl is gracious and earnest, sharing stories and inviting participation in hoisting the sails if you are interested. We enjoyed seeing seals, birds and dramatic scenery as well as some seriously fun sailing. Don't miss this experience of Downeaster Maine.

To start the beauty that abounds the Mt Desert Island is AWESOME! How can it get BETTER? Take a sail on the friendship sloop the "Helen Brooks" with Capt'n Karl....First you embark out of Southwest Harbor..you motor out the harbor ..then the sails are hoisted ...passengers are given the honor of raising the sails ...after that you are cruising by the winds of Maine...Once under sail Capt'n Karl gives you the local lore and knowledge of the area....this alone is priceless! I hope you are as lucky as we were we saw a sleeping sea lion,Apparently they sleep floating and not a care in the world! Hey Maine the way life should be!....Half way in the sail Capt'n Karl brings out quite the spread of cheese crackers and fruit!...Byob is allowed ...if you are taking a sunset cruise bring your camera...awesome colors...the Helen Brooks can accommodate 6 passengers WITHOUT A QUESTION WE RECOMMEND A SAIL ON THE HELEN BROOKS!
