My family and I went to Grumpy's for a late breakfast. I was nervous about going because I had read some of the reviews, but my husband said we should just try it. We got there around 11:00 am and didn't have to wait terribly long for our food. We had missed the rush. Food was good and no yelling from the kitchen. It is only just him in the kitchen so during busy times the wait could be longer. When we left he was in the dining room and was actually very nice to us. I'd go there again, especially if you're a late breakfast eater like we were that day.

The food at grumpys was amazing the lobster omelet had whole chunks of lobster and the pancakes were delicious. The wait was a bit long because they had three groups come in at once. It was defiantly worth the wait though. We are defiantly coming back here soon.

We've been eating breakfast in and around restaurants on MDI for 10+ years while on vacation in Acadia. The truth is... you don't go to Grumpy's for the fast food or exceptional service -- you go for the view! Grumpy's has what we believe to be the most spectacular view of any breakfast place on MDI. It is located at the head of the harbor and gives you the option of sitting at picnic tables outside under the sun, in a screened in porch or in the conventional restaurant. No matter where you sit (with exception of one table tucked in the corner) - you will have a spectacular view. And in our opinion -- it's the view that sets Grumpy's apart. So... when you go to Grumpy's it's best to go with intent to savor it. Don't go when you're in a rush or when you're expecting a big, gourmet meal - go when you have time to appreciate the sun glistening on the water, the boats coming and going from the harbor and the flora/fauna around the rocks. As far as the food and service -- it is what it is so best to keep a few things in mind that are unique to Grumpy's. 1) It's simple, slow food. All food (as far as we can tell) is made to order and prepared by Grumpy himself, one order at a time. Before you sit down, ask how long it will take to get your food. If they say an hour, it will be an hour - most likely because he has other orders ahead of yours. 2) Grumpy sticks to the menu. Before you sit down, ask to see the menu. Because if you don't see what you want on the menu, you are not going to get what you want. Our favorites are Friendly Toast, Blueberry Pancakes and Huevos Rancheros. Maple Cream is awesome too. 3) Grumpy is Grumpy when things don't go his way. We've had breakfast at Grumpy's at least 12 times in the past three years. Based on our visits, we find there are two things that cause Grumpy to yell - orders he can't read and orders that don't get picked up when they're ready. In both cases, he needs help from the wait staff -- and is not shy about letting them know it. So... if you don't want to hear his frustration, grab a table out of ear shot of the kitchen. Hence the reason we tend to sit away from the kitchen, which by the way, is where the best views can be found. Net/net - Grumpy's is best when expectations are set for s-l-o-w food with view with a dash of understanding and good humor.

Food is good but a one hour wait for two eggs with toast and french toast with sausage is a bit off putting.
We went there yesterday and liked the food so much we went back today despite the wait. Yesterday we asked why the name was "Grumpy's". We were told that the owner/chef is grumpy. OK. That sounds cute.
So today we had a charming waitress whom we really liked. About 45 minutes through our one hour wait Mr. GRUMPY who had been thrashing around in the kitchen, screamed at her that she was a f*****g as***e as she emerged. She proceeded to resign in tears and walk out. Following that drama, everyone in the place was walking on eggshells. This is just not what you want or need in a restaurant. I would never go back here just in support of that waitress who at least had the presence of mind and self respect to walk out on this sub human who really is an abusive psychotic.

As we walked into the restaurant, a customer was leaving while mumbling--I know where they get the name because the customers leave as grumpy as the owner. After terrible service in which it took two hours for us to have breakfast, I understand that customer.
