“You'll wish this was your neighborhood restaurant!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2012

Four of us went out last night for my husband's birthday and chose David's 388 because of our good experiences in the past. We are never disappointed here.
We requested to eat at the kitchen bar so that we could watch the chef's activities. They are kind enough to explain their jobs to you even though they are very busy. Bo and Carlos create unique, thoughtful food in a very small, impeccably clean space. Call ahead several days in advance for these seats.
David's 388 has a focus on small plates, but the prices are appropriate for the amount of food served. Unless you are a very light eater, you should try an app, a salad and a main. We love this because we get to sample so many different things.
Our apps consisted of seared duck breast with foie gras butter, tuna tartare (photo), pot stickers and beef carpaccio. Every one of them was fabulous. We moved on to grilled caesar and calamari (photos) and our mains were poached lobster and hake (photo), filet mignon and I had their signature burger which was beautifully rare with seared foie gras and truffle fries.
We eat out a lot on the Portland area and are very lucky to have so many amazing choices at our disposal. It says a lot for our feelings about this restaurant that we would choose it for our special occasions. It should not, however, keep you from going on a cold weeknight in February. It is truly a little neighborhood restaurant and if I lived in this neighborhood and not 20 miles away, I would be there weekly.

“Cozy, comfortable and oh so good!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2012

The rain was pouring, but once inside of David's 388 on Cottage Road in South Portland, Maine, we were warm and comfortable. The staff were friendly, especially Katie, who turned out to be our waitperson. A window table for four, in spite of there not being much of a view was nice, but from what I saw, all of their tables and booths looked spacious and comfortable.

One in our party started with a cocktail, while the rest moved right into a nice McManis Vineyards, 2010 petite sirah. Both the wine and the cocktail were served efficiently and well. The specials were noted and we proceeded to order. Since all dinners are cooked to order, we ordered the course up front, they stage the courses, so the diner does not feel rushed. Everything was presented in a leisurely, but appropriately timed manner. All were fresh and hot, with no hit of sitting under a lamp.

Entrées seem to focus on fish, with haddock and salmon on the current menu, duck, pork "osso bucco", and beef tenderloin rounded out the meats. One "vegetarian" entrée, a house-made pasta with wilted arugula and goat cheese was the sole, but delicious, meatless offering.

Portions are modest, but so are the prices, with the average entrée at $15. The beauty is in the quality, but the quantity is sufficient. A starter, salad, entrée will still leave one comfortable for one of their excellent, but again, modestly sized dessert. Two diners had the creme brulée, which was "good," but a "little too sweet." I had the small individual tarte tatin with a very small scoop of ice cream. Again, quality over quantity, but appropriate (and appreciated) after the meal.

Overall, excellent ambiance, service, food and price. We look forward to a return visit soon.

“Small place a little off beaten track - must try”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2012

this is one of those jems you have to find. the menu options are very different and you will find flavors to temp your taste buds to new levels. Drinks, beers and wine by the glass have great options to pair with any meal. The burgers tent to be top shelf and options of double smoked bacon put it over the top. The seafood was very good quality and prepration was perfect.
