“Petting Zoo”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

When we first entered the room, one of our child said "it smells like a petting zoo". That says all.
$145 a night for this hotel was a little high. Sadly it needs new carpeting and bathroom renovation. The breakfast was fine. We didn't mind the sink outside the bathroom. But the room and the bathroom was very, very small. The whole place felt damp. This isn't the hospitality's fault. They are doing a fine job, given what they have to clean.

Check in was quick and painless. One night in a double, the second in a single. Both rooms were well kept. Breakfast is the normal set up with more room for seating then I've experienced in the past at other places. Plenty of parking. Price is on the lower end of what other hotels in the area were charging in the Portland area ($219 vs $239-249 a night...there were two large events bringing about 30,000 people to Portland, hence the prices hotels were getting). Met about 7 members of the hotel staff during my stay and they were all priendly and helpful.

As far as the street and airport noise...street noise wasn't bad. The airport noise was expected and is not controlled by the hotel, so if you do not want to deal with airport noise, you shouldn't stay at a hotel that has "airport" in their name.

The negatives: This place does not have a pool...not that I would have used it, but someone else might. The handicap access (once again, I don't need it for myself, but others might): I would advise the hotel to consider putting the handicap access on the front (lobby side) of the building. There are no stairs there and it would be a great service to people who have a wheel chair to not have to navigate to winding ramp and narrow hallway on the back side.

With that said, one of the nights I stayed was paid for via a certificate the hotel management donated to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network, and for that I say thanks to manaagement for being kind enough to make that donation. I'm from NH but love Portland and the southern Maine area. The money I spent on the certificate was worth the trip to Portland and this hotel was a great place to stay. Will definately stay here again.

We were overall disappointed in this hotel. The handicap parking spaces are not outside the lobby door, rather on the opposite side entrance where you need your room key to enter; this is not welcoming or sensible for guests who are confined to a wheelchair. The rate was very high at 169 for the quality of our two rooms with no discounts available for a Saturday night stay in July. The rooms are very small. The other user comments about very spotty wifi are correct. The bathroom is extremely small. The toiletries are the smallest size I've ever encountered. The hairdryer, while new, was not properly secured and about to fall out of the wall. The curved shower rod sags. We entered our rooms and both were pitch black and freezing cold. I can't understand why the housekeepers would put the ac on cold and high fan after cleaning the room. This is such a waste of resources. After putting on some lights, it still seemed dark, so I went to put on another lamp that did not work. Noticed that it was unplugged, and it was annoying to look for the receptacle that it should have been plugged into. It seemed that, after vacuuming the room, the housekeeper did not bother to plug back in the lamp, another annoyance for the paying guest. The beds seemed as if they have newer mattresses, but still too firm for comfort for me. The beds were made rather strangely, with the blankets put horizontally so you could only pull it up to your waist! Needless to say, we had to remake the beds. If I paid $99 I would have given the hotel two and a half stars, but at $169, it is extremely overpriced. I wanted to like it here, because I've recently been rather pleased at a few of the choice hotel brand properties, but this one is not great.

I was very disappointed to hear that you had such an uncomfortable stay at our hotel. Please accept my personal apology for the problems that you encountered. We are very proactive in keeping our rates comparable to area hotels and was actually quite reasonable for this high occupancy time of the year. I appreciate you sharing your experience as we would not have an opportunity to improve without your valuable feedback. Please feel free to give me a call with concerns or questions. 207-775-0409. Kind Regards, Beth Landergren, G.M.

This hotel was overpriced. The sink was in the bedroom which was inconvenient. Noise from highway and airport made for a problem sleeping. The mattress itself was very comfortable. Breakfast was okay.

This hotel is decent for a one night stay near the airport. Our room was clean. The sink was outside the bathroom door, which we found annoying. The wi-fi seemed spotty, at least on our mobile devices. The continental breakfast was not very good - don't bother with the pre-made scrambled egg-disc things. Stick to the waffle station, yogurt or fruit.

This hotel was clean and the people were friendly. It's about 5-6 miles away from the Old Port area of Portland (the really charming area of the city) and is located near a bunch of strip malls and big box stores. It is also very close to the airport.

The free breakfast isn't bad for what it is. The pancake shaped eggs looked a bit dubious and the hard boiled eggs were a touch overcooked (over boiled) but it was nice to have a selection. Husband really enjoyed the waffle station although they ran out of peanut butter. Coffee was fine.

Shower door had to be kept closed otherwise the steam could set off the fire alarms and the sink was outside the bathroom door. Only two sets of towels per room. The wifi was fine but it was annoying to have to log in every time you turned the computer on. But, the signal was not a problem.

Biggest problem was that when I woke up in the morning, there was no hot water. Staff said they were working on it but didn't give a time line. The hot water was working a few hours later when I returned to the room.

Price for this location was $140 per night.

The front desk staff was very helpful. The room was a mix. Bedding was nice but the tub had started to turn a little black. I tried washing and cleaning it myself but the stains wouldn't come out so I figured it was as clean as it was going to get without an acid wash. Good location near the airport but overpriced in my mind. Everything in the area was high so maybe I shouldn't complain about the price. Vanity was not in the bathroom but in the entry to the room which I didn't like. Well managed hotel. I'd stay here again but would look for a better rate than $140 first.
