Moose Point State Park, just a few miles out of Belfast, Maine, is a gem in the Maine State Parks system. Beautiful trails next to the Penobscot Bay, a large area for running and picnicking and a chance to walk on the rocky shore. I come here every year, usually with the dog; I have to keep her on a leash but there is a corner where I can let her run free and chase a ball.

I don't know that I'd make this small state park a destination for the day, but it is clean and pleasant; has good new bathrooms, terrific views of Penobscot Bay, and a variety of sunny/grassy, shady/woodsy, as well as covered sites for a meal. The beach is rocky and weedy and fun to stroll; fairly easy to land in a kayak, and a good location if you're heading, say, from Belfast Harbor to Sears Island. We didn't do the hiking trails, but they seemed popular.

Lovely state park with picnic tables right at the water and with many in the shade of trees. They have several short walking trails through the woods along with a beautiful view of Penobscot Bay.

Short easy hikes along the shore, good birding, occasional sightings of seals, great picnic sites, grills. Also a nice meadow to throw a frisbee, run your dogs.
In winter a great place for a short cross-country ski.
Lovely place just to sit and watch Penobscot Bay.
Small entrance fee.

I love this local state park! It is located on Penobscot Bay, with flat walking trails through the woods, along the ocean which make for a perfect hot day getaway! Shhhh, it is a secret most people don't know about! There are bathrooms, grills and picnic tables, open field, you can swim in the ocean on hot days. This park is delightful and rarely crowded!
