“OUTSTANDING people and items”
Reviewed December 16, 2012

My wife and I lived in San Francisco for a number of years in the 80s. We loved our cheese shop on 25th St. We never thought we'd find one like it. Even though we now live in WA state and visit the Seattle Public Market a few times a year - enjoying the cheese shop there it never measured up to the one in SF. While The Cheese Iron is not as large and thus does not have the massive selection the offerings and the people make this the place to go. We visit this area of Maine at least twice a year, never passing up an opportunity to visit this store - puchase a number to cheeses and pates and the quality is outstanding! They also have a small but great wine selection - so if in the area - stop by and enjoy the people and options the buy!

“Locally-owned caring, knowledgable owners”
Reviewed November 22, 2012

I love this spot. They are convenient to Hannaford, which is perfect, since the traditional stores have a limited cheese and wine selection. The owners - who have years of culinary experience out of state - settled here and went into business for themselves. They have free samples of cheese and an excellent deli counter with high-end meat and an antipasto bar. They even have a cheese cave where the ripen cheeses in a humidity controlled room. Most days they have some very good premade sandwiches at lunch-time that they set out on tiered platters near the deli. You can have then press it in a panini to melt the cheese and you're on your way. Small selection of chocolates is available. The service is impeccable. The owners are always pleasant and happy to see you. They take interest in you and chat about where you are headed for the day. Nice people, great cheese. Who could ask for anything more?

“Stop in for an education in artisanal cheeses”
Reviewed September 11, 2012

Conveniently located on Route 1, The Cheese Iron is a surprising little gourmet shop with a helpful and knowledgeable staff. Stop in on your way to the beach house for an education on the artisanal cheeses of New England (and the world), with liberal samples to guide your purchase. Love blue? Try the Spanish Valdeon..my personal favorite! They also carry a nice selection of moderately priced wines, as well as interesting pates, crackers, condiments, and such. If you find yourself caught in a time crunch and in need of hors d'oeuvres for a dinner party, call or stop in and let them put together a sampler plate for you...I've always found their plates to be creative, tasty, and compliment worthy.
