Samoset Resort On The Ocean
Ranked #1 of 10 Hotels in Rockport
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 10, 2010

My husband and I and another couple stayed at the Samoset for the two night his/her golf/massage/dinner/ breakfast package. We selected the hotel based on the positive reviews and were very happy that we did. The hotel is attractive and well maintained. The pool and grounds are groomed and the staff is accomodating. The rooms were quite nice, the beds very comfortable, the bathroom was large and all marble/ceramic. All rooms have ocean views. My husband said the back nine holes on the golf course were amazing. We ate at Marcels for dinner and had great lobster and wine, although the desserts were nothing special. My massause was attentive to my aches and knots. I would definately go back.

This resort is the nicest resort on the coast of Maine that we have stayed at in several years, with a perfect location in mid-Coast Maine, with a beautiful oceanfront golf course surrounding the entire resort. We had a minor reservations mix-up at check-in which may have been our fault, but was promptly resolved in a very generous way by the General Manager of the resort. The accomodations were great, with new bedding and furniture in the units. There were two very good restaurants on the premises, one casual, one formal, and the best pool area I have seen in any resort for a long time, apparently new as well. The nearby town of Camden is a great place to visit for lunch, dinner, or a cruise, but there is everything you need on this property in the event you just want to relax without having to get out and drive for meals and activities. I see why they call the golf course at this resort the Pebble Beach of the East....it is beautiful.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Flume Cottage on the grounds of the Samoset Resort on the Ocean for 10 wonderful days. The Flume Cottage has just recently been completely renovated. That would be our only complaint. A few of the details were still to be finished, such as blinds on some of the windows, mirrors in the bathrooms, etc. We asked for lamps for our nightstands and a clock radio for the bedroom. The staff made these quickly available to us. Speaking of the staff, most everyone at the resort bent over backwards to be friendly, helpful and accommodating. We were especially impressed with Margie at the front desk and all the bellmen.

One of the reasons this place should do well is the daily attention by the General Manager, Coni. He was present most every single day, even on the weekends. Always gracious, he was constantly asking if things were okay. He seems to have instilled that same attitude in most all the staff.

The Flume Cottage is expensive but to have a secluded place for a vacation but with all the amenities a resort has to offer, we would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a delightful place to stay in or near Rockland, Maine.

The food in the Breakwater Cafe was good, especially for a "hotel setting." We were disappointed to find out after arriving Marcel's was not yet open for the season. It has a 4-star rating and we looked forward to that dining experience.

All in all, top ratings for this resort! We will return some day!

My husband & I took an overnight roadtrip to the Samoset............we had a fabulous package, stayed one night w/dinner for 2, breakfast for 2, upgraded to oceanview room for $219. We were wowed!! Everyone was helpful & always asked if we were all set. The service was great from the front desk to the wait staff. The outdoor pool has a zero entry with 0 thru 5 feet depth. Then a hot tub that was wonderful! We used it when we arrived & next day hung out at the hot tub overlooking ocean views. We were in room 414 (4th floor of main building) w/Queen bed & golf & ocean view. Newly renovated room & balcony views were unbelieveable. We took a walk on the Breakwater path out to the lighthouse. You could just hang out at the resort. We ate dinner outside at the Breakway Cafe & watched the golfers and then had a wonderful breakfast with tons of fresh berries at Marcel's. It was a great overnight getaway from Boston. The weather was wonderful & will make this an annual event for sure. Woohoo!!

Recently visited the Samoset after a several year hiatus and could not have been more pleased! The entire place looked great. The rooms have been updated and were extremely nice. Most impressed with the new pool and its million dollar views as well as the poolside bar and restaurant. The staff was extremely friendly and professional as well. Usually vacation on Maine coast and Newport, RI each summer but am seriously considering heading back to the Samoset again as the children had such an extraordinary time.

Having booked a trip and then read the reviews, I was most concerned about the quality of this Hotel. I must say, from the second I arrived, I was totally satisfied. We were there on an all you can play golf vacation. The course was fantastic. It was almost empty and though the greens were slow, the views were memorable. The starter was 90 years young, and has been working on and off there since 1923, offering some nice stories of past times. The room was spotless and the beds were very comfortable. The food at the resort was very good and the gym and pools were outstanding. Though not a five star resort, I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for a nice golfing experience and some rest and relaxation.

On our fifth day of a road trip, we arrived at the Samoset very late. It was the most expensive hotel on our trip, so we had high expectations. Unfortunately, this hotel is terrible, absolutely terrible. It was two stars, at best, and, as other reviewers have mentioned, the website is completely dishonest. When we arrived, we could get no assistance with our luggage but our room was at the very end of a very long hallway (it reminded me of a Vegas hotel). The front door to our room was hardly shut (the hinge broken) and the carpet at the entrance was duct-taped down. The room smelled moldy, and we even saw some mold on the exterior of the building. We actually had to purchase a candle from the gift shop to mask the smell. The room was extremely old, dark, and dirty, and everything was covered in a thick layer of dust. Two of the lamps didn't even work. The bathroom was also very dirty and extremely small. We went back to the front desk in an attempt to move, but after waiting for awhile for someone to return, exhaustion set in and we returned to our room. We ended up sharing the room with a couple flies all night, even though we didn't even open the window. All of this, and we paid four star prices!

As for the food, order Dominos pizza from down the street; it's much better than their food and much cheaper.
