“Sprawling Property on the Ocean”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2013

Visited in April to attend a local show at the Strand Theater. Check in was delayed because woman who arrived before us wanted to review options for rooms in detail with Diane at the desk and then Diane started to complain about her Computer problems. She never greeted us as we waited and eventually blamed the computer when it was finally our turn, as though, as guests who just drove six hours non-stop from our home we should identify and sympathize somehow.

Mark at the bar was warm and gracious and his Hay Caramba Margarita Martinis are superb, although I could not pick up on the jalapeno infusion. He pledged to be open until at least 10pm so we rushed back after the show to find the place dark and closed up. Likely a "manager" wanted to go home, we surmise.

Interior design of restaurant areas is beautiful except for the giant automatic espresso machine which dominated the back bar. Exterior Hotel facade with vague references to lighthouses seems dated, rambling, half-hearted and corny. Not sure anybody can help this as there was obviously no attempt to honor historic architectural references.

Ocean view room was appreciated although we were not asked about bed preference and given a queen/queen with the place at low at occupancy and I did not get much sleep. Bed seemed comfy but I would have slept better in a king. Pillows are either the lrge square decorative accent ones of the tiny "chicklet" ones. We prefer two or four normal size sleeping pillows rather than a quantity of five oddball ones.

I planned to order breakfast for my wife and me by room service with the door hanger menu only to find at 10 pm that ours had been filled out and left by a prior guest and not replaced. One wonders how in off-season how these sort of details missed what happens when the place is rocking?

One would think that those who visit in the off season would be greeted with more warmth and appreciation for making the trip...

We will consider Samoset again and give the team here another try.

Room Tip: In the off season, plan on limited amenity availability and an indifferent, skeleton staff.

Westlakeh,

Thank you for your visit to The Samoset Resort this spring.

I apologize for the inadequate service you were provided at check in time. Our team prides themselves in providing the highest level of hospitality and this experience clearly does not meet these high standards.

Many thanks for your kind words of our bartender Mark and his creative cocktails. I apologize that the lounge hours did not meet your expectations. We are proud of our continuous enhancements to the resort, and are pleased you recognized the new restaurant and lounge renovations.

We appreciate your feedback about the exterior design and décor and will definitely take it into consideration when evaluating future renovations. Please take into consideration the building was built in 1974 and does not contain any historical references to the former building that opened in 1889 and burned down in 1972. We feel our lobby, with its cross cut beam floor from former Portland granary, is the most unique in the Northeast.

I also regret that you did not find the sleeping accommodations as comfortable as we hope our guests do. I would encourage you to contact the front desk to request additional standard pillows be delivered to your room during future visits.

Our housekeeping team has very thorough standards when inspecting our guest rooms and we deeply apologize that your breakfast menu card was overlooked. The staff would have been happy to replace your menu card or place your order for in-room dining via telephone.

We truly hope you will visit again soon, and allow us to provide you the first class guest service that is our standard.

With hospitality,

Cornelius Russell

Our children purchased us a get-a-way at the Samoset for our anniversary.
It was one of the nicest trips we have taken.
The hotel and staff were wonderful.
The first thing they offered was to upgrade our room because it was our anniversary. They put us on the top floor in a small suite. What a view of the ocean. Heavenly.
The meal we had was excellent.
I would recommend this hotel (resort) as a #1 place to stay.

Room Tip: The rooms are very quiet. All the rooms have a view of the ocean.

We had a sisters overnight to celebrate birthdays and had a truly wonderful experience. The rooms were comfortable, spacious and clean and the views over the golf course and breakwater were spectacular. We enjoyed the spa, having nails done and massages -- they brought us drinks and snacks. Dinner that evening at La Bella Vita was most enjoyable. I am gluten free vegan which they accommodated most graciously and I had a delicious meal. The Tuscan Pear Martini was exquisite! Everyone at the resort was very friendly and helpful and seemed to really care that we had a positive experience. I look forward to my next visit!

Stayed with 8 friends from the East and West coasts during late June, and they have done a fantastic job with updating this property.

We had fabulous rooms overlooking the golf course and the water. Enjoyed the walk to the lighthouse at the end of the breakwater.

The pool is zero entry and the pool bar is wonderfully situated with views over the water as well.
Lastly, one night we ate at the on site Italian restaurant and the food, service and ambiance were truly distinctive and wonderful.
A very chic and enjoyable experience overall!!

Even in April, the Samoset was the perfect night away for our family! Beautiful views, a warm indoor pool, friendly staff--it is well worth the visit! Great local restaurants to visit as well! We will definitely be returning to this resort (during the off season) when it is quiet and affordable.

My three sisters and I decided to get away for a short visit at the Samoset and found ourselves in the most gorgeous rooms with views that made you feel right on the edge of the ocean. The room I was in looked out both to the east and the south over the Bay. There's a breakwater at the mouth of Rockland Harbor, and my sisters' room looked right out over it. As girls will do, we spent the late afternoon at the spa and felt so rejuvenated and spoiled - it's an excellent spa and we will go back! I worked out at the fitness center and was impressed with the size of it and all that was available. We ate at the restaurant and had terrific meals. Two of my sisters had the steak-lobster combo platter and I had fish - we all enjoyed our meals very much and it was so nice to be able to leave our cars in the parking lot and simply go downstairs for this wonderful meal.

One of my sisters has booked the very same room for a return visit even before she left the hotel!

Room Tip: Corner suites have views that can't be beat!

We had the pleasure of staying at the Samoset for our 1anniversary year anniversary. We had a wonderful time! The room was gorgeous with a magnificent view of the sunrise over Vinalhaven in the morning through one window and looking out to the Breakwater through the other window.
We ate in the bar and had awesome appetizers and pizza!! We would go back just because of the food. Service was great as well.
overall it made our anniversary very special
