The Breakwater is one mile long. It is made up of huge blocks of granite all the way out to the lighthouse at the end. Although the stones are not level and you need to watch your step a bit, this is a beautiful and fun walk to the lighthouse.

I have walked this several times over my lifetime. The first was as a child with a friend. I remember we found starfish at the water's edge. I have returned many times since. Even if you don't want to walk the whole way, the walk down to the Breakwater from the parking lot has benches for watching the harbor.

It's a nice area to walk and a beautiful view once you're out there. Unfortunately it wasn't open when I went, but has been in the past. The benches to sit and relax are a wonderful touch.

I loved being able to amble along the breakwater observing people and wild life. On such a warm day the breezes were so cooling.

We went there at July 4 and the lighthouse is open to the public. The walk to the lighthouse was nice.

Almost a mile out and then back again - this is a fun and different thing to do while in Mid-coast Maine.

Although the breakwater is constructed of large, flat pieces of granite - there are many gaps in between the rocks - so you really do have to pay attention to where you are placing your feet. It would be very easy to sprain an ankle or worse with a mis-step.

The views of the bay and harbor were great and it was a nice way to spend part of the afternoon.

You want to be fairly certain of the weather forecast before you start out and be mindful that you will need to keep a hold of younger children as there is nothing to keep them from falling off the edge of the breakwater.
