This is always a good visit when in the Rockland area. Take your fishing pole and lures to try your luck at catching some mackerel. Take your blanket and just soak up the sun. Do NOT go out if a thunder shower is pending! It isn't the easiest of walks due to the cracks between the huge pieces of granite used to make the breakwater...but worth the trip!

We were in the area & decided to see this lighthouse, we've been to a few but this was a first over a breakwater. It's 7/8 of a mile on the breakwater, so including your trek from the parking lot let's call it a mile each way. The breakwater is comprised of huge rocks fit together like a puzzle. The surface is uneven & there are spots where there is a sizeable gap. Watch your footing!
Unfortunately the lighthouse was not open when we went but we knew that would be the case, so if getting inside is important to you check before you go. We enjoyed the walk out & the views. Saw some fishing, the birds seemed more successful than the humans. And a ferry carrying 3 cement trucks, we thought that was pretty impressive.
It gets windy even on nice days so you might want to bring along a light jacket or sweater, also water. Once there, there are benches to sit on & relax, before you begin your trek back.
Bathrooms are up the hill from where you parked your car, if you are lucky like we were you might see a Pileated woodpecker in the bushes opposite.
We'll go back again when the lighthouse is open. If souvenirs are important for you, you can go to the Rockland Lighthouse Museum & they have items for sale for the lighthouse.

If you are in the area, this should be near the top of your must-do list. We went here during Windjammer Festival and in the morning so we got to see plenty of activity. The walk isn't as long or treacherous as some make it seem. It just takes some time and don't step in the cracks (obviously). It was neat to see how effective the breakwater is at calming the sea. There is only a bathroom in the parking lot so use it before heading out. Enjoy the nice walk, the sound and incredible sea air and take lots of pics!

This was a "maybe" in my itinerary but we had extra time so we walked out to the lighthouse. I am SO GLAD I did it. It was really neat to see the stone and how it was cut back in the 1890's and the view was great. Also saw some interesting ducks and fish. Plus we had a gorgeous day and that doesn't hurt. HOWEVER, if you can't walk two miles, don't try it. Stones are not even and you must be careful. Overall, i am very glad to have the experience. It was worth it on a nice day. Also, check the times....the lighthouse is not always open inside.

This is a most unusual lightjouse and the manmade breakwater out to it! It is beautiful! But it is a rough and almost two mile walk roundtrip so if you can walk on uneven rock then it would be neat. We couldn't walk that far but still enjoyed it. Had great pictures from a distance.
