Owner description: Celebrating Maine's Role in American Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America's greatest artists. With 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 15,000 works in the collection, there is always something new on view at the Farnsworth. The museum has one of the largest collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. Its Wyeth Center features works of Andrew, N.C. and Jamie Wyeth. The Farnsworth's library is also housed in its Rockland, ME, campus. Two historic buildings, the Farnsworth Homestead and the Olson House, and Julia's Gallery for Young Artists complete the museum complex.

Small museum, not an extensive collection (did not see any Jamie Wyeth on exhibit while I was there). However, "Her Room" showed a painting acquired by the Farnsworth early on, as well as a group of preparatory sketches by Andrew Wyeth. Definitely interesting to see the artist process and the final picture! Staff - who may be volunteers - were not helpful. One person on the main desk seemed to dislike my interrupting her conversation with a question, and a second person working in the museum also could not answer my question (or know who could) about the AW book published by Houghton Mifflin). I mean that they did not attempt to be helpful.

charming... manageable. Well curated. Diverse displays. Wyeth exhibit our favorite, although we enjoyed the others.

Wyeth center across the street had N.C. Wyeth's illustration art. Andrew Wyeth in the main museum with a few Jamie Wyethe paintings. Lovely garden. Unexpected pleasure in small rockland.

This is a regular stop for us when visiting Maine. The main attraction here are the Wyeths -- N.C., the illustrator, his son, Andrew, primarily a watercolorist, and his son, Jamie who works in acrylics and watercolors. This is a small, but quality museum with several galleries, a library and a very nice gift shop. In addition to the Wyeths, the permanent collection contains the works of Maine artists like George Bellows and Winslow Homer as well as contemporary artists like Alex Katz, Louise Nevelson and Robert Indiana, The museum is handicapped accessible, though the entrance and accessible parking could be improved. This year, we were pleased that we were welcomed by a very kind and helpful volunteer [on Sunday, September 8]. Entry fee includes all galleries in the museum as well whatever is on exhibit at the Wyeth Center, one block west of the museum. Lovely garden in the back and a couple Robert Indiana sculptures on site. Make time to visit the Farnsworth. You won't be disappointed.
