“Lovely Museum”

We went on a free night, Wednesday, I think, and it was fantastic. I was shocked by just how large the museum was and the amount of art located in it. We would definitely visit again, even if we had to pay! We made a donation on our way out.

“One of the great regional American art museums”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2012

The Farnsworth is a real gem. Its collection of Maine artists is sensational. It always has a terrific special exhibition. This year's Frank Benson show (which runs until December 30) exhibits his masterworlks from North Haven. The Wyeth center, created from the old Baptist church, is a work of art in itself and contains work from three generations of Wyeths. And a visit to the Olson homestead in Cushing is a moving experience. Set aside a full day to see everything.

“Celebrate Maine's American Art”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2012

The Farnsworth's collection of 19th century American art is displayed in landscapes and portraits by such artist as the Wyeth family of Maine, Robert Henri, and many others. So come and bring your kids as this is a visit for all ages. Free lockers are offered for umbrellas, backpacks, and the like.

“Wyeth and Cushing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2012

Of course, when you visit Rockland or Camden and its neighborhood in Maine, you and bound to visit the Farnsworth Art Museum. Situated right in downtown Rockland (on Museum Street) it has several paintings of artists from Maine or from elsewhere who painted Maine scenes. There is a small auditorium that shows a poignant film about the Olson family, made famous by Wyeth's well known painting of Christine Olson lying on a field and looking up the hill at her farmhouse. It is a captivating story of hardship (Christine was paralyzed) and hard life about a Maine family, and Wyeth’s mystifying connection to this family. The film provides sufficient motivation (even if you are not an art lover) to visit the Wyeth section of the museum. Beautiful paintings! And lo, behold, there is also a separate building housing the illustrations of Andrew Wyeth's father, N.C. Wyeth, and the paintings of his son, Jamie Wyeth.

Remember to pick up a map (from the front desk) and directions to Cushing, a small village 16 miles away, where the Olson farm house is still standing and has been converted to a museum. Take your Farnsworth ticket with you for a small discount. There are regular tours of the Olsen farmhouse provided by volunteers who bring the painting, the life of the Olson family, and Wyeth's connection to the area, to life. There is a surprise in store for you if you think the farmhouse and its location is exactly like that in the painting and the tour guides will explain! A visit you will remember for a long time.
On the way back, you will have to pass through the town of Thomaston, and right there, on Route 1, you cannot but run into the State Prison Showroom. That's right, a shop full of wooden artifacts, gift items, etc. made by the unfortunate residents of the prison nearby. Nothing to do with Wyeth, but hey, why not pick up some cute toys, or a bird feeder or two while you are there!

“A Treasure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2012

This rather small art museum has an extensive collection of Wyeth family works as well as those of other artists. The galleries exhibit the permanent collection, but it is so large that many of the paintings rotate on and off exhibit. And there is always an interesting temporary exhibit featuring a specific artist or artistic theme.
Be sure to visit the Olsen farm, (Christina's World). It is several miles from the museum, but included in the admission price and well worth the trip through the beautiful countryside.
