Owner description: Celebrating Maine's Role in American Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America's greatest artists. With 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 15,000 works in the collection, there is always something new on view at the Farnsworth. The museum has one of the largest collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. Its Wyeth Center features works of Andrew, N.C. and Jamie Wyeth. The Farnsworth's library is also housed in its Rockland, ME, campus. Two historic buildings, the Farnsworth Homestead and the Olson House, and Julia's Gallery for Young Artists complete the museum complex.

We discovered the Farnworth Museum 2 summers ago and throughly enjoyed our opportunity to see the many items from the extensive collection of the Wyeth family's work. Other regional artists work is also well displayed and this summer I was very pleased with the traveling Benson show. But the big thrill was to see that they have finally devoted an entire room to Louise Nevelson, who graduated from Rockland High School. Her artwork is displayed in many of the USA's big museums such as the Chicago Art Institute and the Smithsonian's modern collection. She tried many kinds of art over her long career and the Farnsworth room shows some of her very earliest work for stage, early paintings and then some of her more well known wooden sculptural pieces.

We were advised that the Farnsworth was a good museum to visit. That was an understatment. This is a remarkable museum. There are several buildings, one in what appears to be an old church, and a major one that is a modern structure with multiple levels. The art is wonderful. We were treated to works by Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, Rockwell Kent and Frank Benson. Three are many other works on the walls (and in sculpture) too. A real treat. If you are in mid-coast Maine and have a rainy day, this would be an excellent place to visit. And, if you are an art lover, visit rain or shine.

Interesting selection of Maine artists, including the Wyeths. Some we'd never heard of and really enjoyed, like George Bellows.
Entry fee was fine ($12 for adults) and we enjoyed our 90-minute visit very much.

What luck to have a rainy day and end up at this gem of a museum! This museum exceeded our expectations - wonderful selection of art, with a focus on the Wyeth family. We saw the Frank Benson exhibit, which was wonderful as well.

Dont wait for a rainy day -- visit!

On the day before our vacation in Maine ended we saw an add for the Frank Benson Exhibit. We have prints of several of his painting in our house and decided we could not miss the opportunity to see the originals in person. It was a two hour trip north from Kennebunkport (which took more like three on the crowded two lane road). Even though we needed to be in Boston that evening we made the trip. SO GLAD WE DID. I have thought of those pictures ever since and enjoy my own prints that much more. The light reflects from his painting as though they were really in the sunlight. We took our 10 year old along. It may not have been the highlight of her vacation, but she was certainly not bored. We are so happy we made the effort.
