What can we say? For two Australians looking for an experience of the Maine woods, this was a pretty fine way to do it.
Our little log cabin, Repete, was just what we were after, for our US summer retreat. Actually, the cabin is not so little, with a good-sized kitchen (well equipped with full-size fridge, coffee maker, toaster etc), comfortable large beds and a spacious living area (with books, games and info on local tourism). We especially loved the wide porch, which is divine for sitting in the morning sunshine, and it has views of trees and across to the lake. There's even a nice bath-tub to relax in after a day of hiking the local trails, or swimming, or (in our case) simply lounging in the sunshine on the dock. The cabin is clean, tidy and nicely decorated.
Hosts Mike and Jo are generous and welcoming -- and that's what made our stay all the more memorable. Both have a strong knowledge of the region, its history and sights. Mike's tip on how to spot moose in the wild: be alert for other cars pulled over on the side of the road, as it's a sure sign they're looking at a moose in the marsh -- and that's how we spotted one too!
If we are ever so lucky to return to this part of the world, we'd stay here again. It felt like a little home away from home. Highly recommended.
