We stopped for the observatory and decided to do both. We were driving through from Bar Harbor to Portland, so we didn't get to spend as much time as we would have liked. It would have been nice to do an audio tour or something like that to really get to appreciate what you're looking at. I'm not sure they even offer that. We just walked around, checking things out on our own. Fort Knox is a really neat, well preserved fortress overlooking the Penobscot River. I loved the picturesque view of the little village of Bucksport on the other side. Definitely worth the stop!

Although the fort was never completed or used, but we enjoyed walking through the various sections of the fort and trying to imagine the process of cutting the large granite blocks used in the construction, and trying to imagine what life must have been like for soldiers back during that time. There are a couple of different places where one can get up high and look out over the river -- great view.

My husband and I are senior citizens and our gate entry was $8.00 for the fort and the observatory tower. After we toured the tower (saw beautiful fall foliage) we took the guided tour of the fort. The guided tour 30-45 minutes is free. Lots of history where no action took place or soldiers ever lived. There is one original cannon left. The architecture of the rooms is incredible. There was a working kitchen where a volunteer would bake but that was several years ago. The fort is huge and to listen to the reasoning of having the fort at this particular place made sense but it was never finished our used to protect its citizens. There is a small gift shop on site that serves the tower and the fort. We live in Kentucky and have a famous Fort Knox but this one houses gold bricks!

This attraction was attached with our Penobscot Bridge Observatory visit. Ft Knox is HUGE..you get a little history lesson as well. It's amazing how much work went into that place. Not to be mistaken with the FT KNOX with all the MONEY....this was a fort the soldiers...very cool...

Fort Knox in Maine is a really neat, well preserved fortress overlooking the Penobscot River with a picturesque view of the little village of Bucksport on the other side. Fort Knox is the first and largest granite fort built in the state of Maine. During the construction of the fort in the mid 1800‘s, the granite blocks were obtained from a nearby quarry and transported down to the fort. If you get a chance to visit, be sure to look carefully at the massive size of the granite blocks and think of how they must have been transported down a mountain to the fort without the use of modern day machinery. It is an amazing piece of American history and well worth of bit of your time to visit. Price of admission for the both of us was only $3.00 total. What a bargain!
