“Excellent low priced hotel”
Reviewed November 25, 2011

We use the Clarion when needing an easy place to stay before flying out early the next morning, or taking the bus, or when needing to be at Maine Medical Center early in the morning. The hotel is a little worn around the edges but nothing too awful. We asked for an updated room and the one we received was nice. The beds are very comfy and believe me, I'm picky. Bedding is good quality, room was spotless, bathroom in decent shape. We had no WiFi issues in our room on the third floor. The coffee offered in the lobby was actually good, rare in most hotels of any quality. Best of all was the price. We paid $86 with a AAA discount on their website. I would not hesitate to return when needing a good hotel of great value.

Room Tip: Ask for an updated room when making your reservation.

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive experience with us. As far as the aesthetics of the hotel, we are constantly working to improve our buildings appearance, as well as the comfort and quality of our rooms. It makes me happy to know that the bed was comfortable and you got a good night’s sleep, and that your morning was started with a good cup of coffee. We strive to make our guests feel at home!

Again, thank you for choosing to stay with us on your trip to Portland, and we hope to see you again!

To stay at the Clarion is like staying with friends, The staff are so helpful and very friendly. Greg, Blaine, the young fellow who drives the van, and the kitchen staff are great.
The food is excellent with a great breakfast buffet. The rooms are very clean and updated to be more relaxing. So nice to have a fridge and micowave in your room along with a coffee machine. Nice touches. The exercise and pool rooms are great. Also the compilmentary coffee for the guests is a nice bonus. The beds are comfortable and lots of nice pillows. The whole staff are very pleasant.
Our stay at the Clarion was the best and we will return year after year. Way To Go!

Room Tip: If your travelling with a group the joining rooms are great.

In the summer of 2010, we spent 86 days at the Clarion when our son was in a serious car accident and was in the Maine Medical Centre. The Clarion staff went above and beyond to make our stay feel like home. The General Manager, Greg, equipped our room with a fridge so we could keep groceries, made it possible for us to reduce our costs in many ways. Blaine at the front desk treated us like royalty. The kitchen staff were there to greet us every morning with a smile and always asked how Andrew was doing.

We went back to the Clarion this past weekend - October 7 - 10 to take Andrew back to meet the wonderful people who took such good care of us while he recuperated at Maine Med. We cannot thank them enough - they welcomed us back with open arms and were so happy to finally meet the miraculous Andrew! The upgrades they had done in the past year to the rooms were wonderful and we would recommend anyone travelling to Portland to stay at the Clarion. I know we will be visiting them again.

Thank you so much for the kind words! Though the circumstances were not the best, we greatly enjoyed having you as our guests for the extended amount of time you were here. Your comments have been relayed to Greg and Blaine, who are both very glad that they were able to lend a helping hand in such a trying time.

purchased on priceline so the rate was nice. The lobby looks nice and the staff was pleasant but the room was a bit weathered. This could be where they put the priceline folks as in there may be some updated rooms elsewhere so I would ask. Not much going around the property for restaurants and such but downtown is probably less than a ten minute ride. No refrigerators but I was told by another they are available upon request (if they are not out of them yet). this would be a 4 or more with an updated room.

Room Tip: ask for an updated room!

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. In response to the rooms, we are constantly upgrading, trying to hold every room to the same quality that our guests expect of us. As far as refrigerators and microwaves are concerned, we do have Business Class rooms available; however, these rooms are not typically what Priceline.com rooms automatically book into, but we are always willing to switch your reservation to a Business Class if one is available.

Again, thank you for staying with us and we appreciate your comment.

This was a 1 night stop in Portand on a 7 night trip thru NE. Just wish we would have spent more time in Portland. Do not stay here if you plan to walk downtown- drive or take a cab. Our room was spacious (no fridge or hairdryer though.....) and very clean. The breakfast looked a bit expensive for what you got but there was Denny's that was really close.

Thank you for taking the time to post your rating! We appreciate your comments, and we are glad you enjoyed your stay with us. As far as the hairdryers and refrigerators, we do have them available. Refrigerators are in our business class rooms, though they do tend to sell out quickly, and there are hairdryers in every room, enclosed in a black bag that is hanging in the closet. We recently upgraded our hairdryers to ones that are not attached to the bathroom wall.

Again, thank you for staying with us and we look forward to seeing you again when you come back to spend a little more time in Portland!

Three of us stayed one night before using the hotel's shuttle to the airport the next morning. We had a non-smoking room, two queen beds and a rollaway. The room was a little small for three guys and their gear. We also thought $158/night was a bit steep for place that needs a facelift - new carpet, paint, upgraded lighting, replace HVAC units, a tiny old elevator, etc. The place isn't repulsive but quite comfortable, close to the airport and Portland's scenic waterfront.
The hotel's staff is first-rate, especially the front desk. The friendly shuttle operators made several trips to and from the nearby airport, including picking us up after we returned our rental car after dinner, then hauling us & our outdoor gear to the airport the next morning (4am and 9am). They're efficient and prompt - you won't miss your flight.
The hotel doesn't have a continental breakfast but has a dining area serving an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet including made-to-order omlets or eggs-any-style for $10.95. The buffet is extensive - fresh cut fruit, juices, coffee (including decaf), bacon, sausage, french toast, pastries, cereals, etc. included in the price. The price sounds steep but you won't be hungry for lunch.
We'd stay again but will try to negotiate a better price.

Room Tip: Average rooms for an average hotel/motel.

Stayed one night to visit the Northern Coast before it gets too cold outside. Property is located about equal distance from the airport and downtown. Shuttle service is provided to and from the airport, but unfortunately not downtown. I can understand that the shuttle would be a lot more busy, but maybe 4 roundtrips a day at scheduled times would help a lot. Taxi coupons were provided, but expect fare downtown with tip to be $12-15.

Common areas of the hotel seemed to be kept up fairly well. The indoor pool was nice and big and the temperature was nice. The hot tub however was basically the same temperature as the pool. There were two restaurants. One of them only served lunch and dinner, the other only served breakfast. Prices seemed very reasonable, especially for a hotel.

The rooms, however left a lot to be desired. We were in an older room, which I am normally fine with, but old here seemed to mean not touched in a few years. Examples include all tiles missing in the bathroom between mirror and sink (exposed drywall and some old scraps of wallpaper), missing closet doors (but closet tracks still attached), safety lock (bolt-latch) didn't fit, towels that clearly needed replacing (loose threads ran the entire length of the towel), room missing hotel information portfolio, and other minor items. It seemed strange that all of these items needed attention, given that the hotel upgraded all of the TVs to flat screens (something normally not seen in older hotel rooms).

One caveat from my experience with staying in hotel in the PWM area is that because there aren't a lot of hotels, the room quality tends to be sacrificed. There are some exceptions, but they are basically the new properties. I will also say that this hotel's rate seemed to be a lot more reasonable than other comparable properties.

Room Tip: Ask for a new room if possible
