“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2011

My wife and I recently stayed overnight at The Clarion as she had eye surgery at a nearby clinic.

Proximity to this clinic was the deciding factor in our choice of The Clarion Hotel. While we were prepared for a standard of service in keeping with a budget, chain hotel, we came away very pleasantly surprised with and impressed by all members of the Clarion staff we dealt with.

On check in Blaine offered information on the hotel's amenities without us having to ask and was quick to suggest we call him from the room if we had any questions about the hotel itself or the surrounding area. Caleb drove us to the clinic and was courteous and professional without being distant, a difficult task!

For breakfast we had planned on eating light, but the omelet bar was too tempting to pass up. Our server, Nancy, made suggestions for waffle toppings, strawberries and sour cream, that we would not have thought to try ourselves. Delicious! When she delivered our waffles and omelets to the table she had my wifes choices on larger plates than my own, obviously having noticed that my wife was having difficulty with her utensils given one eye being patched and pain medication slowing her down. This was done with no comment that could have made my wife self conscious and uncomfortable, and was very much appreciated. When we asked about a good place for a seafood dinner, Nancy recommended Street & Co. We followed her suggestion and were very pleased with her recommendation.

While asking at the desk for a cab for dinner that night we were given discount coupons for our taxi fare, unprompted. I am sorry that I neglected to get the young man's name, as I did want to be able to comment individually on each staff member who made our stay so positive, especially considering the circumstances of our visit. We hope to return someday on a more pleasurable visit to Portland.

Thank you for making the time to share your experience with us April M. It pleases me and our entire team, that we were able to make you and your wife more comfortable during your stay. With our proximity to the medical community in Portland, we often have families stay under similar circumstances and our team tries hard to make them feel at home. I will make sure to share your comments with Blaine, Caleb and Nancy. They will be pleased to hear that they helped to make a difference.

Thank you for staying with us and for sharing your feedback.

I had resereved to rooms the Clarion in Portland,ME for one night, mainly because of its proximty to the bus station. Although the staff is friendly and helpful, the accomadations are subpar, for example, there is no refrigerator or microwave in the rooms. There is only one ice machine and that is on the second floor. In one room the toliet leaked leaving a puudle on the bathroom floor, the other room had a leaking air conditioner leaving a wet carpet. In addition the hotel is in a not so desirable neighborhood. Would definitely avoid.

Thank you for making the time to share your experience with us Rerewill. I appreciate your staying with us and am sorry to hear of your inconveniences. The mechanical failures you reference have been reviewed and addressed to avoid any further inconveniences. I'm grateful that you took the time to mention them so that we could take action. I am also sorry that we were unable to relocate you to one of our Business Class rooms which do provide a microwave and refrigerator. They sell out fast this time of year.

Thank you again for staying with us and for providing us with your feedback.

Stayed at the Portland Clarion for four nights. First off, what everyone says is true: this is NOT a true 3 star hotel. The rooms are fairly basic (no fridge, older furnishings, loud air conditioning).

However, do not let that deter you from the Clarion, because we quite enjoyed our stay there for for the price we paid ($75/a night through Priceline). The beds were very comfortable, and the rooms were kept very clean. Staff were extremely nice. And, it was a reasonable distance from both downtown and the retail area, and you could walk to the bus/rail centre from the hotel.

If you go into the Clarion expecting great things, you may walk away disappointed. However, if you looking for a comfortable and clean stay in Portland for a reasonable price, you can't beat the Clarion.

Thank you for your review CaptainJalopy. I agree that in our location, we are a very good value for our guests. We provide many of the same amenities as other full service properties in Portland at a fair and reasonable price.

I recently referenced our extensive room renovations and we will continue to invest in the facility to improve its quality. We do offer a Business Class room category that has a microwave and refrigerator. While we cannot guarantee them through the bid process on websites like Priceline.com, they can be requested. They tend to be reserved very fast this time of year. I'm sorry we were unable to accommodate you for this stay, but hope to rectify that for your next vacation!

I'm thankful you took the time to write, and will share your experience and feedback with the entire team. We hope to have the opportunity to serve you another time.

the room is not clean enough for a 3 star hotel. I found stains on curtains. Corners and edges are very dusty. Toilet bowel is not well cleaned. Towels look old.
However, the bed is comfortable. Sheets look fine. All right to sleep a couple of nights. My kid enjoyed the indoor pool very much.

Convenience hotel because its close to the bus station. So i over night so i could caught the early bus back to Boston.
That,s the only reason in think it was full.
I arrived at Logan airport ( $2 ) went to south station and ( round trip $ 36 ) from there on to Portland Maine. On the return i had to pay an additional $ 6 because i would be stopping at Logan airport first.
The information received was very helpful to me From the reviews. Thank you once again.

Nice clean hotel just off the 295 highway with easy access to the I95. Only minutes away from the shopping of Freeport, South Portland and 50 minutes from Kittery, Maine.
Hotel has a lovely lobby, large free parking lot, internet and wifi, coffee in the lobby but no continental breakfast. Rooms were clean with comfortable beds and bedding. Quiet location with friendly staff. We booked through Priceline and got a great deal of $120.00 (high season rate) per night.
We would stay here again for it's easy location to the exits on and off the highways.

We are a mere minutes from the big box stores of the Maine Mall or the boutique shops of the Old Port. Easily accessible from both I295 and I95, we are convenient as a home base for your Maine vacation or a stopping point on your way north or south.

We appreciate the fact that you made the time to share your experience and hope to see you again.

This hotel was in a very good location, clean and had a good restaurant for breakfast. Prices for all Portland hotels were high for the time of year but I got a good deal using Priceline. The desk clerk told us of a local Italian restaurant nearby and it was excellent.
