“Nice Lobby, Gross room and Pool”
Reviewed September 3, 2008

Upon arriving at the hotel, we thought ' great, the place looks nice and we're only here one night anyway'. That was one night too long for me. Got to the room (late since we were traveling) and thought it was ok upon arrival. Then I went to the bathroom and there were hairs in the tub/shower, stains on the floor and the carpet in the main room obviously hadn't been vacuumed before we checked in. There were crumbs on the desk...All seemingly minor but when you check into a room, you expect it to be clean. We didn't ask for another room because our daughter was half asleep already and we were just going to the airport in the morning. So, here's the REALLY gross part....the next morning our daughter wants to go swimming so we say ok, we'll give it a try. It was completely gross...the only reason I let her get into the pool (for all of 10 minutes) was because the water was so heavily chlorinated nothing could be alive in it! There was algae growing on the pool deck and used band-aids all over the place. It just gave me the heebee jeebees....So, we went back to the room, showered and packed quickly and got the heck out of there....I told the front desk about the lack of cleanliness and she just thanked me for informing her...nothing else, no apology or anything....I'm usually not very picky about hotels but this one even creeped my husband out a bit....

stayed 4 days for a wedding in portland. had a king exec room looking out on the bay. nice big room, good pool, and restaurant. friendly staff and shuttle was available for airport runs and runs to old port which was very handy when you just can't walk anymore! very satisfied with our experience here.

Just came back from a famiy trip to Maine with the last four days at the Holiday Inn Portland by the Bay. Had five of us in a room with two double beds. Had a good stay there but it's just a slightly above average hotel for the price (I paid $156)

- Short walk to downtown or Old Port. Though it's not really "By the Bay", not even close. Could be a pretty steep climb uphill from the waterfront for the elderly
- Housekeeping very quickly got us a cot and a mini refirgerator
- Good breakfast buffet and free for kids
- Good pool, but just an OK gym
- Good restaurants close to the hotel, especially close to Becky's diner on the waterfront. Also close to a movie theater for rainy days
- Free parking is great.

A few negatives - housekeeping forgot us on Sunday and the tub drained very slowly but was quickly fixed when pointed out. Rooms are pretty small. Should have paid extra for a waterfront view as well. The hotel is ugly but no getting around that - could use some renovation as it feels old.

Great service right from check-in. Could not give us a non-smoking room but smoking room was fine, no smell. They apologized even though I made the reservation with the understanding that I was getting a smoking room. Offered to refresh it again if I wished. (Not necessary and we are sensitive to smoke,) Got good advice on restaurants and museums at check in. Free coupon for a drink. The room was a standard two full beds. Clean. Lots of pillows. The breakfast buffet was fine and the service was excellent. Cold buffet $8, hot $10, including juice and coffee. I had a blueberry pancake and it was great with real maple syrup. They told us about Friday night free at the Portland Museum of Art at check-in. Very good take. The museum is just across the street. The waterfront stores are a few blocks down the street, an easy walk. For the money, $165, I thought this was a good deal.

This is a solidy choice in Portland - it's about a 10-15 minute walk to the Old Port area. My husband and I had a "bay view" room on the top floor of the hotel and it was a lovely view. The rooms are standard and the staff at the desk was mildly friendly. However, the wait staff at the restaurant, where we had an extremely reasonably priced and yummy breakfast, were simply lovely. Top notch service there! Free parking is a plus.

Be warned - the elevators are EXTREMELY slow!

Check-in was a breeze. Very quick & efficient. We parked our car in their FREE garage. The garage fills up quickly, but there is satellite parking in a nearby lot. We made our way up to our room on the 10th floor. We couldn't believe it. One whole wall was a picture window with a fantastic view of Casco Bay. WOW! The room was oversized and had a very comfortable king bed. The bathroom was standard size & the shower had average pressure.

They have a free shuttle that will take you to/from anywhere - Airport, Bus/rain station, Old Port, Waterfront, SeaDogs, schools, hospitals & parks. Unbelievable customer service. They drove us everywhere. It was fantastic. Parking can be such a pain in the neck in the Old Port and all along the waterfront. Just place a courtesy call in advance to let the driver know where you want to get picked up or dropped off. If you call last minute, the worst thing would be is that you would have to wait for the shuttle to become available.

The breakfast buffet was great. Lots of options. The food was average, but everything was hot and there was always plenty of it. The hotel bar was fun - the bartender was really cool and he gave some great suggestions for attractions and activities around the Portland area. There are comfy couches & overstuffed chairs in the lounge. A fantastic spot to grab a nightcap at the end of a long day.

Overall, one of the BEST places to stay in Portland. You can walk everywhere from this location or take their shuttle which was available from 6AM - 1AM. Although I'm sure if you needed a ride in the middle of the night, they would totally accommodate you. There is a big pool and a workout room, but no hottub. Absolutely fantastic hotel.

This hotel has a nice location (5 minute walk to the Old Port area). We had a nice Bay view room where we could lie on the bed and still see the water. After we checked in, we got a call from the front desk asking if everything was ok and if we needed anything-very nice touch. They have a pillow menu-so you can choose a pillow according to your sleeping habits. The pillows that were already in the room were good enough for us. We had an Executive room which was adequate for my husband and myself. The houskeeping was very good and the amenities (Shampoos, soap, mouthwash etc..) were re-stocked when they were almost used up. Our rooms were cleaned in a timely fashion. There is free parking in the hotel garage. There is complimentary coffee, orange juice and tea in the lobby-all day long, though there are those minature coffee pots in the rooms as well. The hotel is on a hill, and it is a slight uphill walk from the Old Port area, but is a great way to walk off your dinner.
