I grew up on Amato's REAL italian sandwhiches. They are made with a homemade hoagie roll, ham, white american cheese, RIPE tomato, onion, kalamata olives, green pepper, salt, pepper, olive oil and their signature sour pickles. It can be the dead of winter and they still get the best ripe tomatoes around. Stop off and pick up a few to take the lake or out on the boat. Real Maine here.

We stopped by and grabbed food to go from this joint 3x in two days. The people were always friendly and the good was constantly good. The bread they use for the sandwiches was soft and fluffy and great. The pasta and the sausages were excellent. Skip the salads. They are open really late which is very convenient, especially in that neighborhood where restaurants seem to close a bit early. Not much decor - we grabbed the food and ate elsewhere. The waterfront is a short downhill walk away.

Amato's on India St is just off the Old Port and a must go for lunch. What they do with homemade bread, meat and cheese is pure magic. Grab your sandwich and head to the Promenade and enjoy the view of Casco Bay and Portland Harbor anytime of year.

A must when visiting Maine! Just as important as getting a lobsta! There is one downtown next the Marriott Residence Inn.

When I think of a "regular Italian" the one and only place coming to mind is Amato's. This is one of the best sandwich shops I have visited. This particular location was extremely busy, which I attest to why it had such fresh ingredients on its subs. The sandwiches offered by Amato's are plain but they cannot be beat. I wish this location had more seating on the outdoor patio. It is more designed as a "grab and go" lunch stop.
