“My kingdom for an elevator!!!!”

What an extraordinary island of comfort and style in some very ordinary surroundings! The rooms are huge and well appointed, decorated with a homey eclectic touch. The stairways leading up to the rooms are about as wide as a commercial planes middle aisle. I felt very guilty watching the staff wrestle my wifes single suitcase (about the size of a VW Bug) up one flight from the parking lot and then two flights to our room. I handled my own bag (no bigger than a motorcycle) and my breathing returned to normal within a half hour.

The staff couldn't have been more helpful and their suggestion that we dine at "J's Oyster House" where we had the longest wait for a table (1 1/2 hr) and the BEST meal we had on our three week trip.. Hint: Go to J's very early or very late)

The complimentary breakfast at the Inn was given in an area about 25 ft long and 5 feet wide that encouraged intimacy not only between members of the same party but with a lot of strangers too. I would make a serious suggestion that the Inn get three or four small folding table and chair sets and set them up in the reception area. Your guests would appreciate it.

Our stay here was great and my only regret was that we didn't have an extra day. We left in the morning regretfully and we were fifty miles away before I realized I had both of the room keys in my pocket. We dropped them in the first mailbox we came to and now publically apologize for the oversight.

Thanks for a memorable stay fellas. We hope to see you again.

Room Tip: Offload your luggage at the front entrance and then park as its one floor below the street.

We were coming to Portland to see a show at the Civic Center, and decided to make a weekend out of it.
the Inn at St John was AWESOME!
such a refreshing change from the chain motels.
quick, easy, and friendly check in. i like the early check in (1PM)
lots of old world charm, makes you think of the old time sailors and pirates.
there are 3 floors and we were on the top, facing congress street.
the stairs were built when people were smaller --- they are narrow and STEEP!!
the room was large, clean and comfortable. the decor was retro funky, there was a crystal chandeleir and one of the side tables was an old 40's radio cabinet.
the front of the building is near the emergency room entrance to a major hospital, so sirens-blazing ambulances come by now and again.
the back of the building faces a chinese restaurant (which delivers til 2AM!)
there is a convenience store/sandwich shop next door, and a pizza/beer joint across the street.
there's a shopping center with a sav-a-lot, and a dollar tree around the corner.
the metro bus station is RIGHT across the street (it's a 5 minute, $1.50, bus ride into the arts district --- or a 20 minute walk thru some interesting neighborhoods)
also, the greyhound station is right across the street and there are usually several taxis parked there for hire. (ABC taxi was friendly and cheap enough)
continental breakfast was more than adequate with cereal, bagels and muffins, fresh fruit, yogurt, juice...
i would definitely stay here again.
great value, great location.
EXCELLENT housekeeping staff!! tip them well!
FYI the Portland Museum of Art is open on friday nights 5-9 FREE! a MUST SEE---
also, we took the DUCK tour. an amphibious bus/boat tour of Portland and Casco Bay. a handsome young man narrates the tour and cracks wise. lots of interesting history and, hey, you go into the OCEAN on a BUS!!
i LOVE Portland!

Had an amazing stay! Loved the room. Got way more than I thought for the price. Free Coffee, tea or hot chocolate all day and night. Great breakfast. Would be happy to stay there again. Only dislike slight walk to downtown.

This inn is in a Victorian style building with modern amenities such as free Wi-fi and Continental breakfast. Our room was nicely sized and clean, we had a private bath across the hall which was clean and well stocked with shampoo, body wash and towels. The parking lot is small and you may have to park in the lot of the Chinese place right behind the hotel, it is a little oft-putting but perfectly safe. This hotel is definitely a good distance from the main sites of the Old Port, walking seems as it would be hard (we drove). There is a bus station across the street though. The area the hotel is located in is very quiet and seems safe. The price of the room was one of the cheapest I found in Portland (safe discount chains) and we got our moneys worth.

We stayed at the Inn at St John for our first anniversary for 2 nights. It was quite cozy. We really enjoyed the charming qualities of the Inn. The lobby is an inviting space with coffee, tea and hot cocoa offered 24/7. The space for breakfast was pretty small but seemed to accommodate the majority of people who were eating. Our room was super quiet and very comfortable throughout our stay. The employees were professional and welcoming. The Inn is about 1-2 miles from downtown- we walked one day when it was nice out and it wasn't a bad walk at all. The area immediately surrounding the Inn isn't the best but certainly not the worst. We took cabs 2 times from the Inn- the staff called the cabs for us. It was about $6-7 one way. Overall, we had a very nice stay and would definitely go back.

Room Tip: We stayed in 6C- It's on the 3rd floor which wasn't a big deal as we weren't in and out...

My parents, dog (Lexi),and myself took a family vacation from St. Louis,Missouri to Maine. Since Lexi was traveling with us I used the internet to search for pet friendly hotels and found the Inn at St. John. We arrived on a rainy Wednesday the 19th of September 2012. We parked in the lot behind the Inn, walked up the back steps, down a hall and to the front desk. We were greeted by two gentlemen at the desk. Having made our reservation online the check-in process was very simple. I was given a paid receipt and the key to room 101. It turns out that room 101 is right by the front desk. I was a little concerned because we had our Lhasa Lexi with us. If you're not familiar with Lhasa's they were bred as an interior sentinel in the Buddhist monasteries to alert the monks of any intruders who entered. In other words they tend to bark if they're not familiar with their surrounding. I turned my focus from this concern and asked if there was a way to get our luggage from our car to our room without going up the back steps. My father had a 7-way bi-pass and didn't need to carry luggage up steps. The gentleman said, "Don't worry about that we will take care of that for you." He rounded up several staff members who came outside in the rain and carried all of our luggage to our room. Now that's service! The room was, "Beautiful" and must have been sound proofed because Lexi didn't bark 1-time because of noise. The beds were very comfortable and we all slept good. If I could I'd give this Inn more than 5-stars I would because in my eyes it's a perfect 10.

Room was nice and clean. Private bath down the hall was a minor inconvenience, but acceptable. Located a little distance from Old Port, but there is a bus stop across the street. We took the bus in and walked back. Beware of the steep steps to the upper floors. We had no problem, but if you have physical limitations, get a room on the first floor.

Room Tip: There is a bit of street noise in the morning for the rooms in the front. Not an issue for us, since...
