Maine Historical society isn't like many other small-town historical societies you will find throughout Maine. This is a fabulously-curated museum with constantly revolving exhibits that teach you about the interesting history of Maine in so many ways. There are docents around to ask questions of, video exhibits, photographs and paintings, old clothing and artifacts from Maine's history and so much more.

Small but well curated exhibit about the Civil War with provocative artifacts, and the Longfellow house tour was worth the time.

I visit the Maine Historical Society every time I go to Portland. The bookstore is full of local history with firsthand accounts of life, not only in Portland, but Maine in general. The historical society is running an exhibit on Maine in the Civil War this summer.

I should visit MHS more often. The exhibits are well-done, interesting, and educational with lots of local ties. There's a nice little gift shop too. Parking at nearby garages or metered on the street if you're lucky.
