“Mailboat run”
Reviewed November 21, 2013

This review is for the mailboat run only. This was the only tour that our hotel had information about, so we thought it might be interesting. Wrong. There may have been commentary during the very long run (3 hours or so), but because the weather was so cold we stayed inside where the seats were hard and the windows dirty and couldn't hear it. It was exactly what it says, a mailboat run with just a lot of people being carried to their homes on the islands, and much mail and groceries being delivered by crane. There were no stops except to unload and take on passengers, mail and groceries. There wasn't much to see except islands and water, and that got old after the first hour.

“Mailboat run - a good way to get a glimpse of island life”
Reviewed November 5, 2013

The mailboat goes twice a day (in winter at least) at 10am and at 2.45pm from the Casco Bay Ferry Terminal to a number of islands, stopping to deliver the mail, unload freight and let passengers on and off. The round trip takes around 3 hours and costs $15.50 for adults. It's a working boat, not a luxurious boat, and there is no food or drink offered on board. We found it an interesting way to get a glimpse of what life is like for those who live on the various islands of Casco Bay. The captain gave some information about each of the islands. Sitting out on deck, even in the bright November sunshine, was challengingly cold - we managed for an hour or so and then retreated to the lower deck. A fellow passenger recommended us to have lunch afterwards at J's Oyster, a seafood bar near the ferry terminal. This was a great recommendation and we would pass it on to others. The mailboat trip plus J's lobster roll made for a fine morning.

“Fall trip”
Reviewed October 31, 2013

We took the mail boat run and were very pleased. The captain did a great job explaining the islands, also fun to see items delivered to residents of the islands. I would definitely take the ride earlier and get off on the islands. Being the end of the year lead way to most of things being closed but the trip itself well worth the money!

“Great experience”
Reviewed October 16, 2013

In less than two hours you get a great overview of Casio bay's lands and a glimpse into the history and island lifestyle. Weather was perfect, birds were flying, lobster men were hauling. Just a great day in Maine.

“Great for a ride in Casco Bay”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

My friend and I didn't have much time, so we took the Peaks Island ferry round trip for less than an hour. Lots of families got on in both directions--it must be a daytrip destination. We just wanted a water experience and it was wonderful to see Portland from the water, to see a big cruise ship that was docked there and a tanker leaving the port. Watching the ferryboat staff manage the big ferry was interesting. It turns around on the way back and has to back into the slip in Portland Harbor!
