“Greta Diamond, Peaks and Long Islands worth a visit by ferry”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

We used to visit these islands in our own boat, but now we use the ferry. We get a senior discount and can ride the boat to all of the islands for the same fee. Go to Peaks and take a walk or bike around to see how the summer people live. Have a lobster roll. Go to Diamond Island and "dine" on the lawn with a fine glass of wine and excellent menu choices at Diamond Edge. There is a public boat dock there as well.
You will travel by the Fort in the middle of the Casco Bay and catch a view of Portland Light. Watch for small dolphin and seals swimming around the boats.
There is no better value in Portland, Maine than taking a ferry to the islands where people are happy to see visitors.

“Relax on the Ferry to Peaks Island, Maine”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

Catch the ferry at the Casco Bay Lines terminal for the 20-minute ride across the water to Peaks Island. Considered part of Portland, Peaks Island is one of the few islands off the coast of Maine to have year-round residents and an elementary school. According to locals, it is quite busy during the summer months -- busy by Maine standards, that is! This means riding bikes (available for rent), going to one of the three restaurants, and doing some boating and fishing. In the off season, Peaks is rather quite, but one cafe was open. On the day we visited, the weather was spectacular with sunny, clear skies and the view of Portland was most impressive! Many of the homes here date from the early 1900's and have classic architectural details typical of that time period. Spending a sunny summer afternoon on Peaks Island, riding bikes and relaxing with the locals, would be a memorable experience!

“Always a Pleasure”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

We have often taken the Casco Bay Ferry to Great Diamond Island (Diamond Cove) to visit friends. It is a pleasant ride, stopping to take on and let off passengers and cargo at other islands. Depending on which ferry you take, you may stop at Peaks Island or Long Island on the way, and get more flavor of Casco Bay island life. The only fee for this trip is for the ferry...your ticket is "round trip", so you can come & go on any ferry you wish. In season there are more ferries to chose from, but watch carefully for the return trips, as they end early in the off season.

Although Great Diamond is a private residential island with no cars allowed, you can go there by ferry in season and dine at "Diamond's Edge" restaurant. It is a short walk from the ferry dock to the restaurant. It is best to call ahead for a reservation.

.If you are lucky enough to know someone who lives there, they might meet you at the ferry dock with their golf cart and bring you up the hill to their home. Some of the residences in the Diamond Cove area are condo type town houses located in an old restored military complex. Grounds are lovely, and the history of the old fort is very interesting.

“Now this is Casco Bay!”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

Want a great way to spend an afternoon or evening in Portland? Visit the islands for dinner or just go along the "mail run" on a Casco Bay ferry. What a great way to experience the Bay, get some peak tanning time and see the summer folk.

“Best water tour venue in Portland”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Run by the Casco Bay Island Transit District (not the State of Maine), this is a local, year-round municipal service. Fares are very low - especially in the "off season". A simple round-trip excursion to Peaks Island takes less than an hour and costs under $10. The Captains and crews are top-notch, too. Salty, Maine crews will help you enjoy your experience. If you visit Portland, do not miss this opportunity - even on cold, stormy days! Day or night, the trip is a blast. All vessels have heated, weather-proof passenger areas.
