“Decent Sports Bar, Good Atmosphere, Lousy Wings”

Touted as one of Portland's Best, I stop in at “Fore Play” to watch one of the MLB playoff games between the Red Sox and Tigers on a weekday afternoon.

Although this bar has a strong Boston connection there were not too many Sox fans here to cheer on their long distance “hometown” team to victory.

Since it was “Happy Hour”, I decided to try the “Happy Hour” wings special ($0.50 per wing) and was disappointed.

I ordered them “naked” in hopes of adding my own hot sauce (Tabasco) to them only to discover “Fore Play” does not carry Tabasco or any other hot sauce. The friendly bartender did offer to put "buffalo sauce" on the side.

It is an unforgivable sin to serve wings and not offer hot sauce besides what they can be cooked in.

In my opinion, every sports bar type restaurant should offer hot sauce of some kind even if it is a generic brand. Will there be no ketchup next?

Besides having no hot sauce most of my ten wings were under cooked with blood still fresh at the bones.

In fairness to the kitchen, another patron did rave about the pastrami sandwich he was having and on that alone I would still visit again but just avoid the wings.

In retrospect, I should have said something to the bartender but did not want to somehow disrupt the festive mood of the Sox defeating the Tigers in a great playoff game.

After feeling completely uncomfortable at the first pub we stopped at thinking we should not have come to Portland, we stopped at Fore Play for a bit to eat. The bar tender was awesome. We had great service, yummy cheap food, inexpensive beer and the bar tender talked with us most of the night giving us tips and suggestions on places to see and thing to do in Portland. She introduced us to all the locals stopping by for a drink ... and they all made us feel welcome and as if we were one of the locals.

Stopping at Fore Play was the best stop we made and we had a great time in Portland ... oh and we ended up stopping there for drinks every night we were in town! :)

Ben at the bar took super care of our large group and most importantly, he had the Bruins on most of the TV's. Thanks Ben.

We stopped here for a quick bite for lunch and were not disappointed. Since it was mid-Saturday afternoon, there weren't a lot of people in the place. We had to ask the bartender for a menu, but then were served quickly and the meal was great. We chose to order one meal for 2 of us and were glad we did since it would have been tough for either of us to finish the whole steak sandwich. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy all the TVs with quite a variety of sports playing.
