“Local - eat here regularly....Great!”
Reviewed August 9, 2012

I am puzzled by a few reviews. This is an awesome place. The bar and environs are beautiful, great light (soft), great original art, large bar for eating at (I love this!@), and private tables down and upstairs with room for conversation. Winnie the bartender is one of the best in Portland...she will mix you a drink either a favorite or some concoction that she has invented for you based on your alcohol preference and mood....try her..trust is all it takes...I have had outrageous, delicious concoctions.

In the kitchen, Becky holds sway and is a wonderful chef with a deft hand. She has lots of experience as chef in gourmet restaurants in Boston and the West Coast . .there is a grill in that kitchen and she makes locally sourced delicious food. . .the menu changes with seasons and availability and chef's discretion....the homemade soups are wonderful - each spoonful, real flavor. There are always meat, seafood and vegetarian options. Appetizers, salads and small plates are wonderful.

As for desert. . .homemade and wonderful, have taken an extra order home.

What makes this place is the personal attention and delicious food and beverages in an inviting atmosphere. So much so that we have become regulars.

So I am puzzled at a couple of the reviews. Please just go in and say hello to Winnie, sit down and ask for a drink. . .you will not regret this. Then ask about the menu....I will be stuned if you don't enjoy this well enough to come back. . .

“What happened to the wood fire grill?”
Reviewed July 29, 2012

A group of us went to Katahdin on a recent Saturday night at 7ish. Oddly there was only one other two-top table of diners. When they left, we were the only diners for the rest of the night (not counting the busy bar) and now we know why. The interior is beautiful. We decided on Katahdin based on their menu as presented on their website. Unfortunately we were handed a very different menu, which had only six entrees and no vegetarian options. The menu also had no local food options, but had salmon and shrimp, which are frozen and from away. No local vegetable options. We were first given a bread basket to start, and I am not making this up, but there were only 4 very thin slices of a baguette for 4 people. (No offer was every made for additional bread.) We all ordered the soup of the day, which was a 3-bean soup. This was excellent and the highlight of our meal. We ordered the crab pot special as an app. It was described as a layer of cab, with some cheese, some arugula pistou, chile aoli, and then topped with crab. But, what we got was a hot ramekin full of some crab mixed with mayonnaise and some cheese that had wilted arugula as a lame attempt at garnish. Gross! Not edible. For our entrees, which were ALL advertised as from the wood fired grill, we ordered salmon, pork, and hangar steak. Well, there was no wood fire here, which is one of the reason why we came. The food was fried or baked, or gas-grilled, but no wood. We all independently noted that the food was too salty and all had too much butter, a sign of lazy unimaginative cooking. The steak was tough and covered in a brownish gravy, which was supposed to be a demi-glaze, After eating most of our food, we felt like we had been slimed. One of our party asked for coffee, but they had no sugar substitutes so it had to be declined. Service, well, that was another story. We had to ask 3 times for water, and it finally came. Remember, we were the only table. We never got water refills after that. The server was pleasant, but not a good server. Given that the app prices from around $10 to $12 and the entree prices were $22-26, the food is way over priced for uninspiring butter-laden food. We were most annoyed that a restaurant that bills itself as using a wood-fired grill did not use a wood-fired grill on our visit. We will not be back.

“This is not a place to go if you have a sophisticated palate.”
Reviewed March 3, 2012

The proximity to Portland Stage is this restaurant's best feature. However, even though the staff knew that we were going to the show, and even though we allowed an hour and 45 minutes for dinner (!!!!), service was so slow that we had to rush to get through dessert. They also refused to accommodate special dietary requests. Sever was amateurish. Food had no subtlety or complexity of flavors. Everything was predictable. Salad dressing and sauce on entrees was too strong. No vegetarian options. Meat, meat, meat, and no indication that it is locally sourced. Lemon parfait was delicious. This is a good place to go for a drink and appetizers or for dessert. My advice? Skip the entrees.

“over priced...”
Reviewed April 13, 2011

After eating here several time all that I can say is over priced food and lack of any talent. My halibut was cold and the texture was mushie sign it was old not what I expect here. The chef needs to expand her talent when I went back the same halibut special was on again two weeks later lack of talent maybe. I had the flank steak which I ordered med-rare but was medium not a big deal but for the price? The service was fast paced and alittle rude more of a hassle to rush us out due to the wait. I feel the people that eat there do so not for the food but for its gay/lesbian following the bar was packed which was the one good sign. I will not be back after three visits....
