On a packed holiday weekend we enjoyed sitting at the counter in this fun diner. Good eggs, excellent home fries, good coffee! What else could you ask for? Perhaps a toasted bagel on the side, (actually seemed grilled). All good, including the service during a very busy time. Try it.

We heard good things about this restaurant, but I did not think it lived up to the hype. Most of my group enjoyed their meals of haddock and salmon. I tried the lobster roll, and was disappointed. I had not had a lobster roll before and thought this seemed like the kind of authentic place to get one. We had already cooked fresh lobster twice on this trip, and the lobster roll paled in comparison. It lacked flavor entirely. The service was OK, but the condition of the dining area left something to be desired. The booth we sat in was ripped and looked like it had been for some time. Maybe that is supposed to contribute to the charm of this place, but I would rather sit on a booth that is intact.

Good, plain home cooking with some of the best fried/baked seafood around. I will also mention that their desserts are to die for and are all homemade. The fried clams are wonderful; the haddock is perfect; the baked haddock is very tasty. Portions are generous as well.

This landmark diner is on Portland’s picturesque waterfront. In high tourist season, parking in a small lot or curbside is often scarce, but we found a space. Once inside, a server promptly greeted us. We had our choice of booths or counter stools and chose a booth. Our server handed us a list of daily specials; we both ordered a baked haddock entrée from it. The fish was overcooked and disappointing since we’d come for seafood, particularly haddock. Corn on the cob was undercooked. Baked potatoes weren’t baked through. Fries were lukewarm. Cole slaw was just passable. Our server proved to be cordial but inattentive. Fountain drinks were cold enough, but slow to be refilled. Only a delicious dessert slice of coconut cream pie was just right. Our long waits and indifferent entrées and side orders seemed inexplicable since business was slow. Despite these difficulties, we’d hate to pass up this venerable icon of Portland’s dining history – even if all we sampled next time were to be a slice of one of its 18 or so different kinds of cakes and pies.

Have a mixed review on the food that we ordered. I had the turkey dinner, which was great. Everything on the plate was delicious with a very generous amount. My wife had the fish chowder, which was a big disappointment. The broth was very watery with little taste. My daughter had the tuna club, which she said was very skimpy on the tuna. Since we had read many great reviews on this place and it was hyped up because of the visit from the food channel, we were deeply disappointed with the food. I must say however, that the service we received was outstanding. The breakfast menu looked very reasonable and interesting so we may stop in for breakfast one day and see how that turns out.
