This is Portland's most exquisite dining option. The menu not only changed seasonally but also daily! Don't be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone and try something new. Note: this is NOT a place for kids. They hate it and the other patrons do too. We get a sitter and enjoy am adult night out.

A perfect jewel. People that care about food and know how to bring it all together. A special place.

We go to Portland, ME, at the very least, annually and Fore Street is ALWAYS on the itinerary. This year we made our reservation two months out which is as far as they accept them. We were once again thrilled to be there. The food is excellent and they have a decent wine list to make the whole experience spectacular. The bar also has drink of the day and/or week where the Bar Staff visits a classic and comes up with something creative.
A must hit while in Portland but do make reservations well in advance.
Mind you this visit was with our 9 year old and he is well behaved but Fore Street is more enjoyable kid free.

I'd go 4 1/2 on this one.
It's one thing to be named the best restaurant in any given town. But to get the great reviews and national attention year after year...you've got to do be doing something really special. Tell anyone in the food business in Portland that you've got reservations at Fore Street, and they all swoon. It's where the foodies go. And we were no exception.
Unusual charcuterie plates with lamb hearts, foie gras stuffed pork trotters and beef tongue: a fun trip for the adventurous. Deliciously roasted quail...roasted chicken...fabulous salads with seasonal greens...ravioli with pesto...everything was beautifully prepared in their amazing open kitchen. I like the fact that Fore Street tries to keep their sources local, but I ordered a English pea and carrot salad: wonderfully presented and very tasty. Then we got the ravioli: covered in English peas. Then we got the chicken: covered in English peas. Really? In this case, I really wouldn't mind if they brought in some veggies from out of town. I love peas. But I don't need them in 3 separate dishes on the same night. That's when local sourcing gets a bit silly.
We stayed away from any seafood because we had gorged on it the entire weekend before our dinner at Fore Street.
Although our server tried to move the meal along a little faster than we were comfortable with, she got the message after a while and let us be. (It was an 8PM reservation on a Sunday night...she wasn't going to have another seating at that table anyway.) Wine suggestions and selections were excellent, and though we took home a box of house-made chocolates, we really didn't have room for dessert, with the exception of a wonderful espresso shaved ice.

Between the four of us, our meal was about $200. That did include appetizers and drinks, 4 entrees and 2 vegetable sides, but still...pricey. The oysters we started our meal with were pretty good. Our entrees were decent, nothing amazing, just good (we ordered, pork loins, hanger steak, grilled char and whole bass). The two side dishes were disappointing. We ordered the mashed potatoes and cauliflower. They were good, again, nothing amazing. Overall, we felt that it was pricey for what it offers.
