This was our second visit to Hugo's for the tasting menu offered at 2-for-1 tasting menu (we had the 5-course version) in the winter months. Last year, our visit coincided with the sale of the restaurant, so we were expecting a somewhat more settled atmosphere and we were not disappointed. This year, we tried to eat as little as possible during the day to ensure we had enough space for all the amazing food.

We started out with drinks at Eventide and were very graciously taken the "back way" through to Hugo's to avoid the snow falling outside. From that point and onwards, the service was seamless. At one point soon after we sat down, I noticed our table wobble, and immediately, without us saying a word, a staff member came over and fixed the issue. Also, our waiter was friendly with a good sense of humor.

On this visit, I was more taken with the shellfish dishes than the fish, which was unexpected. The fried mussels and the razor clam dishes were out-of-this-world delicious. Although the fish was prepared perfectly, the flavor combinations of the fish dishes (I had two because I'm a pescetarian) were not quite on the mark. Nevertheless, we were VERY pleased with our entire experience and will definitely return again.

I was excited about going back to Hugo's after their ownership change; I am a big fan of Eventide Oyster, which shares both ownership and a kitchen with Hugo's.

The meal started inauspiciously with a table next to the door that suffered from the occasional chill breeze. Our service was prompt, though the waiter was unctuous. We were encouraged (very strongly) to choose a tasting menu, which we did. As two of us are gluten-free, accommodations were offered to suit our needs.

Out of the 6 dishes, plus an amuse-bouche, each with several elements we had one exceptional plate, one plate with an excellent element but not as successful elsewhere, and 5 near misses. In particular, our dessert was not tasty enough to warrant finishing.

It is fun to have the waiter show up with lots of small plates with clever taste pairings, but the meal simply didn't warrant five stars. Nor did the staff, which tried hard, but was a bit smug.

We had eaten at Bar Lola the previous week, and so could contrast these two excellent Portland restaurants For service, Bar Lola wins. For cleverness and inventiveness, Hugo's wins. For overall quality of preparation, Bar Lola. Value for dollar, Bar Lola. Ambiance, Hugo's.

We are lucky to have such a wealth of restaurants here in Portland. Miyake remains our favorite overall.

There's a reason for it. Food is very uneven. Service is snotty. Prices are astronomical for what you get. I wouldn't mind paying a lot if what was delivered were either superb food or a great experience. This delivered neither.

A romantic dinner for two, on a Thursday evening, where we enjoyed the 8 course tasting menu and wine accompaniments. The service was precise and pleasant, the courses were an excellent series of fish tastes ending with a lamb dish for accent. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that the tasting menu was 2-for-1 -- but we were never offered a standard menu so we'll never know what we missed.

This wonderful dinner was marred by our seating. When we arrived the restaurant was 1/3 full and yet we were ushered to a 4 top set for two at the rear. This table was: with in eye and ear shot of the service station, the toilets, and the swinging kitchen doors. My partner was unfazed but he was facing the front of the restaurant, I spent the 2.5 hours watching folks scurry to the toilet (and hearing the flushing) or getting flashed by the bright white lights of the kitchen. Hugo's is closing for a remodel this spring, I really hope when we go back after the atmosphere is universally pleasant.

Just enjoyed a business dinner here at Hugo's with 7 other coworkers and thoroughly enjoyed the eight course tasting menu. A variety of Tapas featuring local fish, poultry and meat with fantastic presentation and flavors followed each other. Once the savory features were served, it was on to two desert courses ending with a fantastic salt pretzel ice cream. The service was fantastic if not just a bit slow but still an eclectic and although pricy, a wonderful dining experience in a great environment!
