“A must see the Maine Jewish Museum”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

This museum is a must see for any visitor or Mainer on a visit to Portland. The synagogue is beautifully restored. The exhibits are well presented. The last exhibit I saw was of woodcuts and was outstanding. Examples of the techniques used were interesting and clearly presented. If you are visiting the Munjoy Hill area of Portland I definitely suggest a stop at the Jewish Museum.

“Local Jewish Museum in "Old World" Synagogue”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

A beautifully restored synagogue houses a small yet fascinating museum. It has a mix of local Maine Jewish History, some international Jewish history, and current art works. The museum also has interactive electronic displays along with a few beautiful old works of art. A wonderful place to stop and wander around for an hour or so. The sanctuary itself is a work of art. I can imagine Neal Diamond in the Jazz Singer on the Bimma.

“Worth your visit!”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

The Maine Jewish Museum is a treasure and a worthwhile stop on your way up to the Eastern Promenade or where ever your day takes you in Portland. The synagogue is a beautiful structure and great to see from the inside. The history of Jewish immigration to Portland is an important and interesting piece of Jewish history in America and the museum offers temporary great exhibits as well.

“Maine Jewish Museum - You Will Be Glad That You Visited”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

The Maine Jewish Museum, located at 267 Congress Street in Portland, Maine is the one stop which tourists from near and far should make time to visit while enjoying Maine’s largest city. Located at the bottom of historic Munjoy Hill, the Museum is a stalwart fixture in Portland, linking the early twentieth century immigrant era with the new and functioning in a secondary capacity as one of Portland’s synagogues, Congregation Etz Chaim. The Museum received the 2012 Greater Portland Landmarks Award; as curators, the Board ensures both ever-present and ever-changing historical exhibits (the current main exhibit through April 26, 2013 is “Still Points of the Turning World”) (two audio programs entitled “Jewish Voices of Maine” are available on a permanent basis); and in its function as Etz Chaim, boasts two naves. The public is invited to visit the Museum between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each week day or by appointment, and services are held each Sabbath morning commencing at 9:30 a.m. The Museum is a swift walk from Commercial Street and parking is readily at-hand along India, Congress and Smith Streets. Set aside an hour or two to visit the Maine Jewish Museum, and you will have one more reason to be pleased that you visited Portland.

“Very interesting Museum in a lovingly restored building”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

This small Museum is doing great things in Portland! The exhibits change every couple of months and they have provided a glimpse of wonderful mostly contemporary art from the Southern Maine area. The staff are extremely warm and helpful as well as being very enthusiastic and proud of all that they offer. The restored Synagogue is really beautiful in it's simplicity. It is a Portland landmark with a long history. I definitely recommend visiting the Maine Jewish Museum.
