“Small and Different”
Reviewed September 6, 2012

This place had just a few tables with a small regular bar area and a bar along the window. We knew that it had to be good by the number people waiting to be seated. The oysters are kept in a big marble tub on the bar. The raw oysters were about the best we ever had (and we only tried the Maine ones). The food was a bit pricey (and not plentiful) but the quality was worth it.

“Casual atmosphere, seriously delicious food.”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

Eventide is a fairly new restaurant brought to you by the folks next door at Hugo's. If you've been next door, you know their standards, and they do extend to the restaurant next door. The food is equally delicious, but far less complicated and served in a brighter, more relaxed atmosphere. The oyster selection delivers, with at least a dozen varieties on hand, about half of which are from Maine. My personal favorites are the Winter Points with tabasco ice. As far as freshness goes, I've visited twice, and an oyster delivery has come through the front door both times.

Must haves include oysters (any variety, or have them mix it up), the clam chowder (some of the best you'll have - simple, briny and doesn't hide the clams), fried french toast (words cannot do this dessert justice).

One warning, it is cold in there. Bring a jacket or a fleece, even in August.

“Not so much......”
Reviewed September 3, 2012 via mobile

Well, may I say this place is interesting!? Or maybe, just not our cup of tea. My husband loves raw oysters - I like mine cooked. Roasted, fried that kind of thing. So, just keep that in mind. But all in all we would not give this place another try. We don't say that often. Mostly not our vibe - the food was good but not great. The kitchen needs to work on getting orders out in a timely manner. Not sure what they are doing back there- but I am not the only one who thinks this. Keep trying folks.

“Great Oyster”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

The Eventide is an informal, almost chic, oyster bar in Old Portland. They feature over a dozen oyster choices, mostly local, but many from the West Coast too. We sampled Glidden Points (Maine) and Beau Solea (New Brunswick). They were delicious. As an oyster place, they feature several specialty dips too -- including cucumber Champagne, tomato water, and several others. Yum. The restaurant also featured cold, cured (sushi-like) Arctic Char and Halibut with very interesting accompaniments. Just fantastic. They also specialize in local and other microbrews. The only negative is that while the decor is stylish, it is composed of very hard surfaces .. so the place got pretty loud when it was crowded. All-in-all, this is great oyster cafe among many other enjoyable restaurants in Portland.

“The best place to get Oysters in Portland!”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

Eventide has the best selection of Oysters in Portland. Staff very good and professional service was very good. When you go to Maine you want to have Maine products and Eventide gives you a great selection of Maine Oysters as well as from other areas. Oysters are shucked right at the raw bar and done very well not grit or sand. Oysters are washed and cleaned before going to the raw bar. All the other places in Portland had a very minimal selection and one only had Oysters from Virginia. This place has a great vibe about it and you feel very comfortable here. Menu is limited but very good. They have a very nice wine selection as well as draft beef. Try the Cucumber Vinaigrette or Shaved Ice Horseradish for your Oysters they were very good. We went back twice and loved it both times. This is now one of my Portland Maine favorites and we will be back. This is the type place where you can have a drink and oysters before going to dinner. It is small but comfy and all the food was very very good.
