My wife and I have stayed here about 3-4 times.

It's a great place to stay. The staff are helpful and friendly, the location is awesome, and the entire property is very clean and well maintained. Greg the bartender has been there for years and makes you feel at home. The staff at breakfast make eggs or omelets to order, and a Belgian waffle machine is available. Valet parking is $15.

Make sure to book either well in advance or immediately before your stay -- the place tends to fill up and king sized beds tend to disappear.

The only downside that I can come up with is that the sausages on the breakfast buffet could be better.

The hotel itself is fine, with perfectly good but standard rooms, and good service. What makes this place ideal is its location. It is right on the waterfront in the midst of the liveliest part of the city near many shops and restaurants. The best thing about the location is that it is right next to Standard Bakery, which is truly outstanding, and the obvious choice for breakfast everyday. You can cross the road an eat it on a bench on the waterfront. Fore Street is right above Standard Bakery and is an exceptionally fine restaurant -- reserve well ahead if you want to eat there.

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. We saw where the other hotels were in Portland and nothing beat the location of the Hilton Garden Inn. If you're on the ocean side, you have a lovely view. As soon as you step out of the lobby you are on the waterfront, with all the restaurants, shops... it's steps from everything. Go an addition three blocks and you are in the shopping mecca of Portland. I wouldn't stay anywhere else on my next visit.

My boyfriend and I arrived a little early for check-in (it's at 4pm) so we asked where we could relax and get a couple of drinks until then. The guy that parked our car recommended that we check out Novare Res to hold us over. Just a couple blocks away, it was a great bar with a private outdoor seating area with picnic tables and an AWESOME beer selection. Anyway, about the hotel... we got back at about 4:30 and our room still wasn't ready. The people behind the counter were super apologetic and offered us free beer at the bar while we wait. (By the way the staff here was super young and friendly while still being very courteous which is a nice combination). We sat at the bar for about 30 minutes with our free beer while the super friendly bartender (Denis?) went through just about every menu of every restaurant in Portland to offer his recommendations. He also pulled out a map and drew up the areas that we should check out. Very helpful!

Our room was finally ready... and it was lovely. We used Hilton Honors points so unfortunately we didn't get to face the ocean, but I expected as much. Our room was all the way on the end in the corner and overlooked the uber popular bakery nextdoor. It was clean, comfortable, nice TV w/ hundreds of movies, and great light. Even with the check-in delay we had a wonderful stay and the employees made up for any inconvenience.

A week after we got home, we received a personal email from someone at Hilton telling us that they had been informed of the check-in delay situation and they were very sorry. They even gave us some free honors points to make up for it. The fact that such a huge company offered a personal touch like that was pretty nice.

The location of this hotel is perfect for business or pleasure in Portland, Maine. It is right across the street from Casco Bay Lines and a quick walk to the Old Port and many restaurants and bars. The rooms are good sized with very comfortable beds and the staff is very freindly and professional. If you work for the government, ask for the Govt/military rate as they have quite a good rate for this.

Room Tip: Get a Harbor view room.

This was my first trip to Portland and I was just so impressed with the area! The hotel was very clean, the staff was very friendly and helpful, giving great suggestions on where to go for the evening.

Of course, we were here for a bachelorette party and we did get a little rowdy late night and had a few visits from security. But I've always wondered, why does any hotel staff member see 15 women checking in with large coolers and thing it's a good idea to put them in rooms across the hall from a family with young kids?

Aside from our little run in with security, who was actually very nice at 2:30 a.m. considering how loud we must have been, we had a very nice trip. The few, minor complaints we had about the rooms (a/c not working, light blown out) were fixed by the time we came back from dinner and dancing.

I also have to rave about the food up here. We hit 3 restaurants while we were here for one overnight and all of the food was great! The lobster sandwich at the Dry Dock was fantastic and we sat outside on the deck with plenty of room, although the waitress told us we'd be crowded in. I think she just didn't want to lose the tips.
Dinner at The Sebago Brewing Company was awesome! I tried a little of several things and if anyone can get me the recipe for their stuffing I would be ever so happy! It was bread stuffing with pumpkin, slices of green apples and cranberries and I've never had anything so delicious!
Last - we had brunch at Ri Ra on Sunday afternoon. I ordered the Irish Breakfast Roll - which is a thin roll, grilled and buttered and about the size of my head, covered in hash browns, eggs, cheddar cheese, sausages and rashers (which is actually Irish bacon, that is similar to Canadian bacon) and it was awesome! And way too much to finish! Also - you have to try the sweet potato tater tots... They're just magical!

I should also mention that all of the bars and clubs were full! It was much busier than I expected it to be - but in a good way! Places weren't necessarily over crowded, just busy enough to have a good time!

Expensive hotel, but as it is said it's all about "location, location, location." We only stayed one night on our way back home from visiting relatives in Maine. The staff was warm and welcoming. There was a night supervisor who sent up complimentary drinks because we were having issues with our lock, which we thought was nice.

Our view wasn't anything extraordinary. We overlooked the delicious Standard Baking Company which was fabulous for breakfast since the hotel doesn't have a complimentary continental breakfast. Lame, considering what you pay for this place. There is an all you can eat breakfast at the restaurant downstairs for about $12. Great for someone who can eat a lot.

After seeing my bill this morning, I don't think I'd stay here again unless I could get a better rate. Felt like I was paying for an NYC hotel. We did have our dogs with us so that added to the total. So to sum it up:

PROS: LOCATION, clean & comfortable, friendly-staff, pet-friendly

CONS: EXPENSIVE, have to pay for valet parking, no continental breakfast

Stayed there on a trip back from the Maine coast en route to Washington. Holiday season meant the hotel was on the pricey side and a bit too pricey for what they offer, parking is extra. Had a waterview room, which was ok but nothing special. Breakfst typical GardenInn standard. Close to downtown Portland which is nice to visit.
