We've stayed in many B and B's and Inn on Carleton is certainly one of the very best. We were so happy to have been able to stay here recently. Old homes like this, lovingly restored and expertly decorated, are a pleasure to visit. Combine that with the excellent service from Buddy and Cindy and one becomes spoiled very quickly! They were so warm, welcoming, and helpful. I honestly don't think I have ever met an innkeeper/hostess as happy and bubbly as Cindy. Her sunny disposition cant help but make one feel fantastic! Buddy was so friendly and knowledgeable about area attractions, restaurants, etc.
Our stay was made even more fun by the fact that we stayed in 3 different rooms; not by our request but by minor scheduling issues the inn had. We were more than OK with this. We were booked in Room 4 for two nights. We found this to be the quietest room. We were in Room 6 for one night. It was definitely the largest room, but could hear folks in adjoining room and also heard typical "city" noises for a while. Things seemed to quiet down by 11PM or so. Our last night was spent in Room 2. It was a lovely room but bathroom was the smallest of,the 3 rooms. It could also use a ceiling fan. It's best feature was the very comfortable bed. Although we found a few "dust bunnies" in the rooms, they were basically very clean.
The breakfasts here were very good and served on time. We loved the coffee--delicious! It was noted that all guest requests for breakfast choices were met. We also appreciated the snacks, cookies, water available at all times.
We stayed in 3 different B and Bs during our tour of Maine and this was the best one; Cindy and Buddy made our stay so memorable. We would recommend this inn to others and would stay here again.

This B&B is great. The innkeepers Buddy and Cindy are sooo welcoming. The rooms are very nice and quiet. The breakfast was delicious and we even had live piano playing during breakfast which was amazing. Thanks for that!
The location is pretty quiet and in walking distance to downtown. There are lots of nice restaurants not far away.

The rave reviews on TripAdvisor are well deserved, and don't seem to have gone to Cindy or Buddy's heads. They are still very welcoming.
Beds were comfortable, rooms well appointed, water hot and plentiful. Breakfast will remain the highlight of the stay with a selection of Granola, eggs as you like them or special. We only stayed 2 nights, but both specials were super.
Cindy's tips on places to visit and eat were right on.
As close to perfect as you'll get.

This B&B is fantastic. Our room was lovely, beautifully decorated and very clean. It was quiet and we had a very restful and peaceful night. Buddy and Cindy are extremely welcoming. The food is delicious... The shortbread at tea time was very more-ish, we kept going back for more (very naughty)! And breakfast was extremely yummy too. The top reviews on tripadvisor are very well deserved as we really couldn't pick fault with this lovely B&B, it was perfect

Room Tip: Room 3 is the biggest and is set away from the others so it is very quiet and almost feels like it...

My husband and I spent four days at the Carleton in late August. Buddy and Cindy do a fine job of creating an inviting atmosphere. The furnishings are lovely, the décor is classic, and it is a warm home to find your way back to. What is amazing too, is the walls are thick and we hardly heard a peep out of the other guests though the Inn was full the entire time we stayed there, which is unusual for a B&B. The bed was comfortable, the room was well done, and we slept well. The location is perfectly located, as it is no more than 10 minutes to get anywhere from where you might want to go via car, or walking downtown is about 15 minutes.

Cindy is definitely the heartbeat of this hotel, and orchestrates the delivery of the most delicious breakfasts we've ever had in a B&B! She is a bubbly start to your morning, full of passion for Portland and great suggestions on where to go! In addition, the piano playing during breakfast from the talented young man who lives next door is a fabulous touch! He is a gifted singer/actor and Boston Conservatory graduate, and we had the pleasure of a having an entertaining evening of "Les Miserables" performed in his Toy Theatre...an awe inspiring moment we won't forget! Ask Cindy to help you arrange your own private showing. He has many different musicals to choose from. Staying at the Inn on Carleton was the highlight of our trip to Maine; you won't find a more friendly, delicious, and entertaining spot than the Carleton!

Room Tip: We peeked into all the rooms and they were equally as well done as our room number 6. Cindy provide...

Reviews like this make owning the Inn all worth it all. Thank you so much for the kind words on the Inn , David and of course our Cindy. I agree she is the heartbeat of the this inn. A heart of gold we tell her. Glad you enjoyed David's Piano playing at breakfast. A guest favorite. Hope to see you back at the Inn.

My wife and I stayed at the Carlton Inn for four nights in early September. The recommendations on Trip Advisor were right on target. This is the best B&B we've ever come across! The property itself is circa 1870, charming and immaculate. Our room was spacious and comfortable and we commented to each other several times that we couldn't believe how quiet it was. Cindy, the Assistant Innkeeper, is a bundle of positive energy and enthusiasm and gave us a number of terrific recommendations with regard to things to do and restaurants. Service from Cindy and her son, Ian, at breakfast was unsurpassed - coffee and tea cups were never allowed to go below half full and they checked in frequently to see if any needs were unmet. As for the breakfast itself, "incredible" comes to mind: Absolutely delicious, savory, large portions, and beautifully presented. Croissant french toast stuffed with strawberries and marscapone may have been the best thing we ate in 9 days in Maine (and that's saying a lot). Breakfast was beautifully enhanced by the piano stylings of David Worobec, who is a neighbor to the Inn. We got to know David a bit during our short stay and simply can't say enough about the talents of this young Boston Conservatory-trained operatic baritone. Folks, if you are traveling to Portland, don't miss the opportunity to stay at this wonderful establishment -- we may go back soon just to experience it again!

Room Tip: We were on the top floor on the Carlton Street side and had virtually no street noise.

With the summer season so busy here in Maine reviews like this give you that great feeling of owning and running the Inn all worth it all. Could not run the inn without Cindy's cheerful and positive outlook every morning. And always a joy when David stops by in the morning and plays the piano for guests during breakfast. Again thank you so much for your kind words.
Warm Regards
Buddy Marcum .
