We stopped in Portland for the night and this hotel was right in downtown. The room was a little small, there was a lot of furniture crammed into the space that made it feel tight. Plus we brought our baby crib with us which added to the tightness. Even though the space was limited the room was very clean, the bathroom was big and the bed was really comfortable. It was a great night sleep.

Right outside the hotel are tons of stores and restaurants. It was great to have the car parked, (it is valet only) and not have to worry about it the entire night. We traveled here in July, and the area was packed with people.

Overall, it was a great stay, the hotel was really clean, the staff were really friendly. If the room had been slightly bigger it would have been nice, but for one night it was a great size and we spent most of our time walking around anyways.

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to hear that there were problems with the air conditioning and that the room wasn't as large as you would have liked. We aim to provide our guests with the best experience possible and are sorry you had a less than excellent stay.

We stayed here and the room was lovely, though Portland was a little disappointing. Nice enough, but really just a stepping off point for the Maine coast. The art museumi is nice for a small city but the downtown is only ok

Room Tip: ask for one of the new rooms

Wonderful experience! Beautiful facility, great location and very helpful staff. All the necessities in the room...mini fridge, wine glasses, cork screw, robes...no ice on our floor so room service delivered it! Lovely courtyard garden venue for breakfast.

Portland Harbor Hotel is a luxerious hotel. It might not be exactly at the harbor, but it is in the harbor district. We stayed in a king bed room, which is very modern, hardwood floors, nice furniture and decorations. Only thing missing was a mini fridge (however, there is a ice machine on each level if you want to cool down some drinks in your room). We only stayed for 1 night, so we were not able to interact to much with the staff. However, I do want to point out that they have the friendliest and most effective valet guys. All in all it was a great hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing Fore St. If you are a light sleeper, the noise from the fun and bustling F...

Found this place as a last minute while in Maine with my boyfriend. We got there at almost 10:00pm and found the most welcoming staff. From the Valet that took our car and luggages, to the front desk, all the way thru the next morning at Eve's Garden for Breakfast. While our stay was very short, I recommend it to anyone visiting Portland. I will definitely be back!!!

Room Tip: Certain rooms will be noisy due to an alley full of pubs with music. It was all done by 1:00am tho...

I've gotta hand it to the PHH, they are certainly reaching for the stars. Downtown Portland gives you two choices that aren't B&Bs or "cheap and worth it" chains - the Regency and the PHH.

The PHH is trying to raise the bar, and is mostly successful. Well-run, clean, well-appointed and well-located, with well-trained and competent staff, it is certainly a class establishment. At it's luxe price point (about $400 a night for a standard room during high season), it is on the low rungs of the value ladder.

Before I list my nits, I should point out that overall, its a very nice hotel. If you are looking for a clean, nice place to have an event, centrally located, you won't go wrong. It just barely made four stars for me, because I couldn't call it 'average' in good conscience. But compared to true luxury brands, it falls a bit short, and it keeps calling itself "luxury," and prices itself accordingly, so I evaluated the PHH on its own terms.

Rather than a purpose-built luxury hotel, it feels like a re-appointed & upgraded chain. $400 a night (including valet/tax/etc) is steep for Portland, and travelers have to ask themselves whether a few niceties are worth an extra $100 a night. With a Hyatt Place set to open across the street

My specific nits include:

- The rooms are standard size for chain hotels, with a desk crammed against a wall and a single armchair tucked into a far corner.

- Both entrances, from the street and in the garage, are very design-unfriendly. The garage entrance is a grubby little glass and formica alcove, while the street entrance is an elevator lobby and massive carpeted staircase, neither of which is very inviting.

- View choice is either "city", which is marred by serious noise from the "Oasis" bar across the street, or "Courtyard" which faces an internal deck which is used for events and by guests for breakfast and general fresh air. Our first floor room opened directly onto this courtyard, which made us reluctant to open the shades until we were fully composed. No chance to open a window in this configuration, either.

- The bathrooms do contain separate bath and stone-lined shower, but the overall design is cheap-looking, and the sink contains only one basin. Fixtures are pedestrian. Also, the lighting is poor, with sconces instead of pot lighting.

- No mini-bar, but there is a mini-fridge.

- Housekeeping neglected to reset the alarm clock from the previous guest, leading to an unplanned, and unwelcome, 6:15am search for the off button on an unfamiliar sony clock.

- Overall design is classic, not modern, with imposing wood furniture and a TV armoire that dominates (oppresses, really) the room.

- Ridiculous rates for valet parking, in a tiny garage. I paid $16 plus tip to have my van driven 25 feet. Typical for such wanna-be luxe properties, the poor valet staff is always overwhelmed, manning a wired phone, a cell phone, and a valet line both incoming and outgoing. Plus a house car. I feel for those guys.

- The bedding is nice, but a league below top hotel linen.

- The Front desk feels a bit snooty, like they take themselves a bit too seriously. Nothing I can put my finger on, exactly, but there was a distinct curtness to every interaction. I found this a big surprise, actually, and really inexcusable. Compared to the welcome I got at the Four Seasons in Boston only two days later, the welcome was...severe. Consider that I rolled up to the FS with a van full of kids, dressed way down, in the midst of McCartney being escorted to his tour bus out front. The GM actually greeted us at the elevator and made some kid-friendly tourist suggestions in the midst of the chaos.

The PHH will have to step up its game as the competition increases in downtown Portland. Or drop its price a bit.

Room Tip: If you value sleep and like to open a window or curtain, ask for a upper floor courtyard view.

Thank you for your detailed feedback, you've given us a lot to talk about. We do take all criticism seriously and apologize for the issues you experienced. Please know that we are in the process of upgrading our valet entrance and plan to make the arrival experience better. When you return to Portland we hope you will stay with us again, perhaps this time in one of our newer Executive Suites, they are spacious with larger bathrooms and a more contemporary look. If you stay during the shoulder seasons or off-season you will find that our rates have more flexibility. Should you decide to return, please let me know personally. We hope to see you again soon.
