What a lovely inn to stay in. We were in the John Keats room on the third floor which was spacious and beautifully decorated and had a really nice bathroom. The only downside to being on the third floor is the very narrow, curving staircases which are difficult to navigate when carrying two suitcases! The inn is in a quiet street yet only minutes walk from the bustle of downtown Portland. There was a good selection at breakfast and the staff were very friendly.

We stayed there in the beginning of July. Dale was there to greet us but that is a rarity as he lives in Miami for half the year. The staff there is very cordial and helpful.
We stayed in the Longfellow room which has a very comfortable bed and a nice little side room with a wet bar and good books. The TV really needs updating as it is quite old. Even though the room faces the street it is extremely quiet due to the old construction.
The only downside to this room is the size of the shower. It's about the same size as the TV, very small. My wife is petite and was uncomfortable in there. Not bad, not great but the price is right up there.

We loved our stay at the Percy Inn! We were enchanted upon finding our names on an envelope just inside the door, and our room was extremely inviting with big windows, a cold bottle of cider on the bar, and the radio softly playing.
Our room was light, extremely comfortable, and we loved the little side room with radio, bar, and small library. Loved having a collection of DVDs and a piano to amuse us downstairs, and an excellent selection of food and drink for breakfast. We especially enjoyed all the complimentary touches- from little candies in a bowl by the bed, to water bottles in the small fridge, and hot coffee and tea anytime we wanted.
The host was hands-off, but that was perfect for our honeymoon and we appreciated the privacy, but attention to detail. We hardly needed to ask him anything, because it had all been anticipated and provided for already. Lovely little back garden for sitting too. I often think back to the Percy and hope to return for an anniversary some day.

I have only walked through the property, and while there is great potential, I think there are small things they can do to greatly improve the look and atmosphere on the inn. All rooms could use new bedspreads/bedding. They look old and tired. It's time to trash the old televisions for new flat screens. If the inn can afford those, I would just get rid of the old ones then. It just completely dates the place. And there are certain pieces of furniture and fabrics that make it look like this place hasn't been updated since the early 90s. (Same goes for the website.)

There are beautiful B&Bs within walking distance from The Percy Inn, which are bright, clean, newly renovated. If the Inn could just invest in some superficial improvements, it could go a long way. It's just hard to choose this place over the others, considering their prices are comparable.

Had this recommended to us by the Visitor Info Center, which was our 1st port of call on arriving in a very wet Portland for the first time. Staff at the center phoned the owner who offered us a much reduced rate as it was late afternoon when we arrived.
We headed over to check out the room & decided to stay. Like other reviewers, we never met the owner, only spoke to him on the telephone.
We were in the Keats room right at the top of the house - flight of steps up to the front door, then flight of steps to the 1st floor where the dining room was located, then very steep, almost spiral set of stairs up to our room at the top of the house. Definitely not for the faint hearted or less mobile, but the room & en suite were delightful. Beautifully decorated & appointed. Felt like we were staying in a private residence. Old property, full of character but with all mod cons.
There was a small kitchen outside our room well stocked with tea & coffee. There was a small refrigerator in our room, well stocked with soft drinks.
Breakfast was self service, but excellent selection of food.
Central location with free parking adjacent to the Inn. Close to shops and restaurants.

Room Tip: Not for anyone less than fully mobile, I would suggest because of the stairs. The house was a tardis...

We stayed at the Percy Inn on an extended weekend visit to Portland -- Friday - Sunday. When we arrived we found, as did all others, no one to greet us but an envelope with our name on it lettling us know the rooms was ready and waiting for us. There was a sign on the dutch door directing us to call the Inn keeper as he ws away from the Inn to let him know we were there. I did speak to Dale and he welcomed us to the Inn and also told me that the Portland Museum of Art offiers free admission on Friday evenings. He then confirmed that the room was ready and the key was in the room and to go right on up.

Up we did go. To the 3rd floor to the Walt Whitman room. After getting over the shock of the stairs we walked into a very quaint room. Nicely furnished with a queen size bed, comfortable chair, a desk and dresser. There is also a sink and small refirgerator in the room that was stocked with soft drinks for our use. Right next to our room was a small pantry room that had tea, hot chocolate coffee (instant) and a spigot on the sink that had instant hot water. There was also an ice maker as well. The bathrom was more than sufficient. Nice size pedestal sink, full size tub and well working shower.

The breakfast was just as advertised and was all we needed. Continental breakfast consisting of berry pie of sort, fruit, hard boiled eggs (kept warm), assorted toast, muffins, bagels.

Other than the "Phanotm Innkeeper" the staff at the Inn were bvery pleasant and helpful and our stay was very enjoyable.

Porland is most definitely a walking city. Even though the Inn is located on the west side of the city, we never used our car the entire weekend. We walked every place we had to go.

Room Tip: Be aware since the building is a Row House with 3 floors there is no elevator. The stairs are narro...

Carrie, who managed our time at this great little place, made our entire experience here a pleasant one. She was relaxed and fun to talk with, and pretty much knew the correct answer to every one of the many questions we had about Portland. She was generous with the Inn and a joy to have around...in some B&Bs we dread having the manager or owner close at hand, and this was definitely not the case here.

We knew we were getting the last available room, the Ralph Waldo Emerson room, which is off the downstairs kitchen. It's an add-on to the main building, and doesn't have near the historic atmosphere of some of the other rooms we saw while there, but turned out to be pleasant and homey in a way that we don't usually experience. Next time we are there, we plan to get one of the older historic rooms...if we book far enough in advance.

There was a nice large, clean, attractive private bath, a room heater very adequate even in the blustery cold weather we had, and all the amenities we required. I seldom recommend the beds when I travel, and like nearly every hotel bed, the bed was so-so...but we're used to very firm memory foam and thin pillows. I recommend bringing your own pillows...something we always do. That said, the bed wasn't unusual for an Inn.

I'd recommend this place to friends looking for a friendly stay in a great little city.

Room Tip: The Ralph Waldo Emerson room is an add-on to the Inn, and has a "Average Hotel" feel, as o...
