The tasting room at Maine Mead Works is open all day, but I highly recommend going for a tour before your tasting. The process of making mead is interesting, and there is a small staff at the location, who are all very passionate about what they do and are extremely knowledgeable. They take you through the process of making mead and you get to see the small, but efficient space in which they work. All of the mead is hand made from start to finish, from the brewing process to putting the labels on the bottles. It is amazing to see how they work.
This was my first time tasting mead. I was excited to try it after the tour, and they offered about 7 tastings of different flavors. I don't think that mead is my cup of tea, but there were some flavors that were better than others. We ended up buying a bottle just because it was so unique (the lavender flavor) and it was such a great experience that we wanted to support this business!
This was definitely worth the half hour or so of your time that it will take if you are in the Portland area.
