Our stay at the Portland Regency was perfect (Oct 16 & 17, 2012). We have some minor mobility issues and choose the Regency for its central location, we wanted to be close to Exchange and to Fore Streets (the center of the Old Port area) which were just one short block away. We were assigned a perfect room (422) with a balcony. The room was very clean, quiet, newly decorated, and came with robes and extra pillows. A complimentary croissant breakfast with coffee delivered to our door each morning was a wonderful touch. When we asked valet service for directions, Andy, suggested that we use their courtesy van to avoid finding parking near the places we visited (J’s Oyster Bar, Back Bay Grill, and, Fore Street Restaurant). All the staff was friendly and helpful which made our stay special. As for the balcony, it did overlook a parking lot, but what other hotel offers a balcony? The balcony was an added good touch and was very clean - - and, there are views to the left and to the right, please see picture.

Heading north to avoid hurricane Sandy, we ended in Portland, Maine. I chose the hotel because it had history - the building was originally the town armoury -and because I liked the look of the bar in the photos. It is ideally situated in the old port area, with lots of small shops and galleries nearby, and plenty of restaurants to choose from. The bar fulfilled it's promise and we whiled some time away there while the edge of the storm was blowing outside.
We had a suite with a fireplace which was very comfortable. Only downside was that there was a tide mark round the bath which I reported to housekeeping but they still didn't do a good job and I really don't like bathing in a tub with someone else's scum!

My husband and I stayed for two nights while sightseeing in Portland. It's a beautiful historic hotel and because its historic, the rooms are smaller than more modern facilities. It's could be a turn off for some, but for us it felt like we stepped back in time. We are pretty picky about beds (Tempur-pedic owners) but found we slept quite well. We spent most of our time exploring Portland, so the room was really used for sleeping. Valet service was priced well ($12 a night plus tip). Once we got to the Regency, we walked everywhere. it's a VERY easy walk wherever you want to go around town. Ate one breakfast there because we were in a hurry, but the food was just OK. In a foodie town like Portland, there's better to be had. Drinks at the Armory Lounge in the hotel, however, were FANTASTIC. Huge list of signature drinks. I'm still trying to perfect a Honey Badger at home! Great service, unique rooms and perfect location - We would definitely stay at the Portland Regency again.

This beautiful hotel is located in downtown Portland Maine. Close to local businesses, great restaurants, clubs, diners, and the fishing piers. My wife and I had a nice clean room, excellent service stafff, good hotel restaurant, and was close to everyting we would want to do while on vacation in Portland ME.

Room Tip: We had idiots in the room next to us and they would have partied all night had I not called the fron...

Stayed in a deluxe king. Room was small, unimaginative decor, small window (read cave-like) with worn carpets. Conversations and music came in through the bathroom air ducts. Not what you would expect for the price. Valet service was prompt. Next time in Portland I will look more closely at options on the downtown side of the Old Port.

Room Tip: Upper floors may have had larger windows.

Our second stay. The deluxe rooms are nice, with balcony. Really have only two issues with these rooms:
Firstly there is no full length mirror(!),which seems unique to this hotel, all hotels provide a full length mirror...They would fit nicely on the closet or the outside of the bathroom door.
Secondly, there is no safe. For a fine hotel this is standard. There is a perfect place for them in the cabinet with the fridge. We do appreciate that a fridge, coffee maker, good coffee and creamers in the fridge are provided.
The reviewer that says that the walls are thin and the halls can be noisy is quite right, and that can bother some.
The location is perfect. You can get to your own car to get things in their valet parking lot which is hugely more convenient than needing to have it fetched just to get things out or put things in.
The bar is great. We haven't tried the dining room since there are so many wonderful options all around the area.
The downtown hotels are not inexpensive since there are only so many of them and the demand for them seems to be intense pretty much year round.
Oh, and the staff are pleasant. That is important, too.
We will be back.

My wife and I stayed here a few weeks ago while we were attending a friends wedding. We found it to be very convenient to the Old Port area, easily within walking distance of restaurants and shopping. The room was very clean and nicely appointed, and the staff was friendly and helpful. If you have the choice to include breakfast with your room, definitely do so. It was delicious! a heads-up: friends of ours stayed here as well and had a room in the basement (ours was on the first floor). They said that they were kept up all night with the sound of water rushing through pipes in the ceiling. On a better note, the complimentary morning coffee in the lobby was a nice touch. We would definitely stay here again the next time we are in Portland.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the basement
